Hey all!

I just got extensions done in a weave about four or five days ago. They put in six tracks I believe and then put in 16" hair. Anyway, a few hours after I got it done my head started to hurt incredibly. So much so that I started getting sick to my stomach from the pain and thought I was going to throw up (sorry to be so grafic!). It's not so bad now but certain areas of my head are still sensitive (mainly the front closer to my forehead where it is a more sensitive area) and now I just realized that the reason it hurts there is because I have scabs. Is this normal? What should I do? I like my extensions and just spend a bunch of money on them so I don't really want to take them out but it is a bit painful. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Micky

Tenderness after extension application is normal and sometimes over-the-counter pain reliever can just barely take the edge off.

Scabs? That is so NOT normal. In order to get a scab, you have to release serosanguineous fluid. That happens with cuts or scrapes when there's bleeding involved. Or, if anyone has ever burned themselves with a curling iron but didn't suffer an open cut, that serosanguineous fluid was released through tissue damage.

Scabs mean there's damage to your scalp. It'll be up to you whether you want to take your extensions out or not but I'd definitely have someone look very closely at your scalp and advise you what's going on in there.

Please come back and tell us the outcome of this.

Back in the day when I was getting weaves, I wouldn't get 'scabs', but I would get raised, red bumps or welts on the scalp along the braided area.

Is that good, no, it is your scalp's reaction to the braids being too tight.  Did I take them out, hell no!  I wanted my hair at any cost!

I wore a weave for about 5 years, and did not suffer any long term damage to my own hair.  In fact my hair was the best it's ever been, then I switched from weaves to a glue method, and my hair was trashed.

Now, some people can get damage from weaves that are too tight.  They can get traction alopecia, irreversible bald spots from the braiding being too tight.

I would say keep these in for the duration, and when it's time to take them out, evaluate how your natural hair is doing and then decide whether to put them back in again or not.

I am also very tender headed and would get the red bumps.  they turn into scabs if you scratch them.  scratching is a no-no!

Scabs sound like trouble to me. Does you head still hurt a lot? Unless it gets a lot better quickly, I'd get them removed.

I'm sorry this is happening to you....

I am getting a few tracks put in tomorrow (these will be my first extensions)... and I'm really nervous!

I hope your pain (and the scabs... yikes) subsides! Good Luck!

Traction bumps, I'd bet. They're not really scabs- they're little irritated, raised bumps where the hair is being pulled really tight. It happens sometimes with extensions that are either very heavy or very tight. Give it a few days, and don't scratch them! If they haven't gone away in a few days, go back to your stylist and have them take them out and, if you choose to have them put back in, done a little looser.
