hi! i know that people here say that hairlocs are pretty damaging, but how are they on virgin, healthy hair? i have a lot of hair, although it is a fine texture and it's never been colored or had any processing done to it. would my hair be likely to break using a hairlocs-type method, or should i just avoid that route altogether? thanks!

A hairlocs type method is different than hairlocs brand name.
that is many people have no problem with extentubes or
microrings. But I think it is hairlocs that A) is made from
copper and therefore turns your hair green and B) uses a funny
opening tool that shreds hair reagrdless of condition.
Are you going to do your own or have them doen professionally?
i want to have them done professionally...there is a person i found at a salon that will do the eurolocs (or whatever brand it is that she uses...not hairlocs i think)...she said she would do a full head for around $500...is that reasonable?

where are you and who is providing the hair? that will help
determine reasonable. and of course what kind of hair. It
doesn't sound ridicuoulsly out of line. YOu want to find out what
kind of metal the locs are made of and what the opening tool looks
like. no pointy ends that shove into the loc to shred the tool...
i am in houston, texas...the name of the salon is hair bistro...i went several months ago to talk to the stylist and she showed me a brochure where she would order the hair from and then it was $75 a bundle to install the hair...i can't remember what kind of hair it was, but if she charges to install the hair separate from the cost of the hair, then i would assume that it would be OK to bring my own hair and 'locs'...if i can bring my own supplies, can you suggest a good product (hair and locs) that would be somewhat affordable for me? i have access to quite a few hair supply places here in town, but i'm not sure of the quality of the hair, nor if they would have the pre-tipped hair and the locs. thanks!

regarding hair choice, so many options such wide price range. whoa!
the 101 link and the bridget link at the top Both have some discussion of hair type I think.
length of hair, price range, color, texture, human or synth, pretipped or tip it yourself... yeah lots to cover there.

or I think from hairpiece.com
Doc's microrings (linkies) are at drlocks.net slightly larger but I've had plenty success with them
her links and hair may be fine and she shouldn't be offended by you
trying to research what you are doing. then you don't have to do
any of the leg work...
I have done eurolocs on many clients, and I now no longer offer that method because I have seen damage. I agree that the damage is probably caused by the pointy pincher type loc opener or that when the loc is crimped, it forms rough edges that chew away at the natural hair.
I do have a handful of clients that have not suffered any damage from it and they like the method a lot. I continue to do the method for them, but I will not offer it to a new client.
i personally have been doing Hairlocs for quiet a while now.
While i have not had any clients suffer any damage from them i do check everytime they come in for maintance.
the remover tool can be very sharpe and yes it can cause damage if not used properly. i have personally buffed the sharp edges with a buffer and i have also applied some acrylic to make the edges softer.
another thing i do is the way i insert the tool to open the loc is a bit different then most do. i go in from the corner while i move the hair out of the way. alot of damage can also come from the sectioning and the way the loc is closed. As with any method, you want someone who really wants the best for your hair.
my clients hair condition is top priority. That is the main reason i came to this board. There has been some real horror stories on a few different methods. I will not use a method and jepordize the well being of my clients hair.
i have also begun using the shrinkies method- that method is great and so far so good. continue reading and check out how long the stylist is doing her method, see if she has a portfolio , get references. i welcome my clients to check me out! i have nothing to hide and any good caring stylist wont either.
