Mayor Ray Nagin of New Orleans has stopped all animal
rescue now that mandatory evacuation has begun. Please sign
this petition, and forward it to anyone you can to sign, to make
sure animals are included. Animals can survive on this water,
but they are going to starve to death and the
contaminated water will shortly start to kill them. Many are
chained and cannot get food.
PLEASE, PLEASE TAKE "ONE" MINUTE TO SIGN THE
PETITION.

New Orleans Animal Rescue in Peril. Help urgently required!
Contact: Dana Nesbitt (President) Humane Society, LA Cell:
901 268 4610 Email:humaneLA@cs.com
NEW ORLEANS, SEP 8, 2005. Despite the heroic efforts of
volunteers and animal groups from both Louisiana and around
the country, time is running out for the animals trapped in New
Orleans, after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Help is
desperately required to rescue animals trapped in the flooded
ruins of New Orleans or roaming the streets in hungry packs.
Help is also urgently required to help care for the hundreds of
animals rescued and located in shelters with no power or
running water. Here's how you can help!
-BOAT OWNERS! Boats are urgently needed. Flat bottomed
boats, canoes, anything that can be used to travel around the
flooded streets of New Orleans, and which is big enough to
hold rescued animals. You must be able to transport the boat to
the Louisiana SPCA http://www.la-spca.org/ shelter
established at 9093 St. Landry Rd., Gonzales, LA 70737.
HSUS volunteer Linda Nealon can be contacted at Gonzales
on (225) 647 0712, but that line is very busy. Bring a boat and it
WILL be used.
-ANIMAL CARE AND CONTROL PROFESSIONALS. Anyone
with professional animal rescue, control, veterinarians, vet
techs - particularly those with water hazard training--would be
extremely welcome to come help search and rescue animals
from the hazardous flood conditions. Come to the Gonzales
shelter.
- NEW ORLEANS NATIVES. We need people familiar with the
backstreets of New Orleans to help navigate the backstreets of
the City. Come to the Gonzales shelter.
- OWNERS OF LARGE TRUCKS: We need people, preferably
with ‘official-looking" vehicles (flashing lights, the name of a
rescue agency painted on the side will help rescuers navigate
in the city) to help transport rescued animals out of New
Orleans to Gonzales. Come to the Gonzales shelter.
- BRING SOME SUPPLIES! Gonzales desperately needs the
following: water proof walkie talkies and flashlights, D batteries,
insect repellent, sunscreen, waders, animal medical supplies,
heavy duty gloves for handling wildlife, and containers full of
gasoline. Bring them to Gonzales! They are urgently required.
-POST STUFF. The US Postal Service is supplying Gonzales
again. Mail higher value, lower volume items to the shelter like
meds, etc.
-CALM DOWN DISTRESSED PETS. Our rescued dogs are
freaking out. If you can even just drop by for an afternoon with
some dog treats, chew-toys and "greenies" and pet a few
distressed pooches, and take some for a walk that would be a
tremendous help.
The Humane Society of Louisiana, St. Francis Animal Shelter
and Best Friends Animal Sanctuary are jointly operating a huge
emergency shelter at 115 Obed Magee Rd., Tylertown, MS
39667, where rescued animals are cared for in the longer term,
before being adopted.
-HELP US TRANSPORT animals from Gonzales to Tylertown.
Bring large vehicles suitable for animal transport to Gonzales.
The Tylertown Shelter has hundreds of animals but hardly any
volunteers to look after them. There is no electricity or running
water. There are no landline phones. We desperately need
helping hands. You cannot post supplies to Tylertown, as the
US postal service has not resumed in the area.
-LOOK AFTER RESCUED PETS. Come down to Tylertown, but
bring your own food, clothes, tents, medical supplies and
enough gasoline to drive here and back home. Think of this as
a camping expedition with a purpose. We do not have the
resources to support volunteers. People with experience of
caring for small mammals and exotics like spiders and birds
are especially welcome.
-BRING YOUR CONTRACTOR SKILLS. We are trying to erect
new portable buildings to house the vast number of animals
being moved to Tylertown. We need people with the skills and
tools to erect fences and buildings, wire up generators, etc.
-BRING BUILDING SUPPLIES, GENERATORS, GASOLINE etc.
Anyone who can supply portable building kits, fencing etc.,
please bring it to Tylertown.
-WE NEED AIR CONDITIONING. If you have AC units which
can run off generators and could bring them down help set
them up that would vastly improve the miserable hot conditions
for the distressed rescues.
-BRING SUPPLIES. At Tylertown we need walkie talkies,
flashlights, D batteries, insect repellent, sunscreen, animal
medical supplies, heavy duty gloves for handling wildlife, and
containers full of gasoline. The Humane Society of Louisiana"s
Executive Director, Jeff Dorson is at Tylertown and he can be
reached on his cell phone at 901-268-4432. However phone
reception is patchy in Tylertown and Jeff is very busy.
PLEASE NOTE: We are desperately short of people, so anyone
helping out must ensure that they can look after themselves,
and have enough gasoline to get back home.
PLEASE HELP US BY DONATING: The Humane Society
website is now back online at
http://www.humaneLA.org
That mayor is a whack job. He seems to have been doing more harm than good throughout this whole disaster.
There are several great private (and public) animal agencies doing nothing but animal rescue: Humane Society of Louisiana, Noah's Wish, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary - they drove all the way out from Utah to round up abandoned pets to take back to their facility. It's just amazing some of the rescue stories, and those people just keep at it nonstop. Those people show the ultimate compassion, truly.
My Katrina donation $$ went to Noah's Wish.
Edited to say that SAS's petition has WAY met its goal of 1000 signatures - mine was #15987!
I hope it makes an impact on that chump.

Thank you, Thank you... Dunbug,Syren and Pinkpanther
Yeah Syren.....these animal rescue groups are amazing aren't
they....!!
I think the petition was a type-O....I think the goal was maybe
more like 10,000 or maybe they mean't 100,000 now that it is at
almost 16,000 already. I know 1,000 was not right as soon as I
saw that.
C'mon ladies bump up these numbers!! I have been adding on
all my family members too.

I would NEVER ever leave without my animals either. My friend said it best. You can put a pet on your lap when you evacuate. It's not like you can fit another person on your lap.
Leaving your pet behind to solve what? It makes them look like jerks and I don't admire anyone that thinks it's the "right" thing to do in time of a crisis.
I have been working diligently collecting clothing, various items, donated money to Red Cross and 1/2 to the ASPCA. and I have a few listings on katrinahousing.org, craigslist.com and others offering a room in my house for homeless pets. And I'll even let them bring their owners. I would hate to separate them.
I'm also signed up with a few different agencies (nursing and other volunteer) to go down and volunteer and I'm waiting to hear back.
I told my boss I was waiting to hear back to find out when I would be leaving to volunteer, and because of other situations at work (she has been trying to find ways to get me fired) she took me off the schedule totally! So now I can really focus on what's important and how I can be of more service where I'm wanted. She tries to intimidate me and it doesn't work. It's quite funny and she has no clue that it's just a job to me and with what's going on with our country and it's people, she just freed up more time for me to help.
So, back to the animals. I'm signed up with numerous rescues but it seems like everything is on hold because of politics. And FEMA is giving $2,000 a person for clothing? HELLO dude??? Everybody and their brother is collecting clothing in the whole country and they still haven't received clothing? How about focusing on saving lives of the poor elderly and the animals! And let the citizens bring down clothing and households. I have collected just from my closet a whole wardrobe from bras to shoes (25 pairs, mostly new) jeans, bathing suits, socks, underwear, dresses, shirts, dress clothes for someone to start a job, and then I have childrens and babies clothes and shoes, etc to go down. I am just so angry I'm venting. I can't sleep (I can eat) but I'm feeling helpless up here until I hear the word that I'm needed.
Yes I'll sign the petition!
If any of you southern chicks know of people needing clothing or whatever, every town in my state is collecting, as I'm sure every other state is doing.
Oh, one more thing while I'm on a roll. I've been listening to a lot of talk radio and discussions on how Americans can't depend on our government to save us, so we as individuals and groups, need to prepare ourselves in case of disaster. They even gave a list of items that you would need to survive in case of a disaster, so if you guys want me to post it, I will. Sorry for ranting.

Wow, Elvira! Great post. Your attitude and actions are exactly what it means to be American, in that energetic, giving, compassionate, 'get-it-done' way. Way to go.

I have also signed!! I have 2 german shepherd dogs, and if anything happened to them, I would feel so horrible! Our pets are like family members in some ways, except our pets accept us for who we are and by signing this, I hope that it impacts those jerks!! Thanks SAS for the link!!

thanks so much for posting and getting the word out.........it takes a special type of compassionate, tough, and empathetic person to do animal rescue. knowing several people who will work until death to ensure no animal is left behind to suffer is only small consolation when they aren't allowed in...
just a couple other links:
many animals from the region are now in need of new homes. here is a link for the northshore animal league adoption form if you are in the greater NY area:
Monetary donations can be made to the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association by calling 1-800-524-2996 or 225-928-5862. You can also download a donation form at the LVMA website at www.lvma.org, or send a check or money order made payable to the Dr. Walter J. Ernst, Jr. Veterinary Memorial Foundation, 8550 United Plaza Blvd., Suite 1001, Baton Rouge, LA 70809.
i have always believed that the true sign of a civilized society is how the animals are treated. thanks for everyone's tireless work - both during this crisis as well as on a daily basis - to help us become more civilized :)
Signed also & posted it on a dog forum I belong to. They all signed as well. Elvira, please post your info on this thread. I would enjoy reading it.
My company has sent $500,000 and three helicopters with medical personnel to assist in the rescues. One of my great friends I used to work with is in the Coast Guard and he's been rescuing non-stop since they *FINALLY* let them in. My god, what took so long. As part of the Disaster Control Facility in my own county and a citizen of this country, I am horrified by how this has been handled and I cannot believe the unwarranted loss of life that has occurred. I can only look at the news and TV with "WTF!!!???" screaming in my head.
And when I see the animals, the heartbreak is tenfold.
A nation's progress can be judged by how they treat their animals. - Gandhi
