Two months ago I had dyed my hair from light blonde back to my natural color which is Dark brown (it almost looks black) - I used Revlon's Dark brown 3N Level 3/permanent to achieve the dark brown look.

After dying it back to my natural color I regretted it because it looked too dark. Yesterday I bought a box of L'Oreal's Ash blonde number 8A/Level 3/permanent, and dyed it at home thinking that it would brighten my hair a lot more and my entire hair would have one solid color (I forgot that my roots which is virgin hair had grown out about 1 inch)....

But instead it made my roots a light red color and the rest of my hair is medium brown. I would like to now even it out but I would like to do it at home, so that I can save some money. What do you think I should do to even out the color, so that my roots are also medium brown as the rest of my hair.

Once my entire hair is one solid color I would then like to brighten it up to a light golden brown but I do not know what color to use/buy.

P.S. My hair is naturally curly.

Sincerely,

Linda

Do not try to bleach the dye out.

I'd suggest that you get colorfix color remover from a beauty supply and try to remove as much dye as possible.

It'll probably turn your hair orange/light orange.. I don't think it'd be wise to bleach the hair more. So I'd suggest that you apply a dark neutral blonde dye to the hair after removing the old dye.

Then you can consider to put in some highlights I think, cause that's not as risky as putting bleach over your whole hair again. And it'll still make the hair appear lighter :)

Thank you for your great advice :O),I will keep it in mind. Yesterday I made an appointment with my hair stylist, so that she can correct my hair color. I will also bring this up to her attention to see what she thinks.

I will keep you posted with the outcome...

Thanks again,

Linda

good for you :D

But I still think you should remove the dye yourself with colorfix, before going to the hairdresser so that she gets a clean slate to work with.

Also because a lot of hairdresser uses bleach based color remover or just bleach to remove old dye, and that's very damaging.

So If you remove the old dye yourself, you'll save time at the hairdresser and money aswell :)

You are right about it being expensive with the hairdresser. Yesterday I went to see my stylist and she told me it would cost me anywhere from $175.00 to $300.00 to get the color removed. She said she was not going to use a bleach but another product that does not damage the hair but at the same time it is strong enought to remove the color.

I asked her if my hair will be damaged afterwards and if my hair will fall off due to this color corrector she is putting in my hair. She said that it will definetely put stress on my hair and that she cannot guarantee me that my hair will not fall off.... she said this is the reason why they make all of their customers who are going to get a color corrector sign a paper authorizing them to do it just in case something happens they are not held liable.

She also said that its a long process to get this color out of my hair and that she would have to put this color corrector on my hair twice in order to get the color out. After she told me all of this I really got discouraged and scared, so I am going to do it at home instead and save some money, and at the same time have a piece of mind. I told her what you had told me to do and she suggested not to do it because I was going to ruin my hair and possibly do more damage than they would do.

what do you think? :O)

I think that you could do it at home really.

Colorfix doesn't contain bleach and isn't so harsh on hair.

So as I said before I think you should try to remove as much dye as you can with colorfix yourself it may take 2 times to get a lot of the dye out.

Then if you got to light orange/dark yellow you can use a semi permanent dark blonde toner. Or if you just get orange you'd be better of with a light brown toner.

Then after that you may consider some highlights to make the hair appear lighter, I don't think that you should even consider going back to allover light blonde because then your hair most probably will break/fall out :(

I will definetely take your advice. I have one more question is the toner the same as hair dye? Since before you told me that after removing the hair dye with colorfix to use the neutral blonde dye and now you are telling me to either use the light brown toner or the dark blonde toner. I have never heard of a toner and that is why I ask.

Thank you again for your great advice, I have learned something new.

toner is just a semi or demi permanent dye, it's as simple as that :)

A neutral blonde toner means that it has a brown or beige color base  depending on how dark the color is. Which means that you won't have any funky outcome, like dark orange, bluish, or greenish haircolor after you've dyed your hair with it.

Cause if you example use golden blonde toner it will contain a lot of red and yellow pigments, which can cause your hair to look even brassier.

What I'm saying is that you should use a neutral dark blonde or neutral light brown toner.. You could go for a dye but that will cause more damage to the hair than a toner..

I really hope things work out for you

Gotcha! I know what you mean now. I am going to do it this weekend and God willing it will turn out good. I have one last question, when my roots start growing in you will see my natural color which is almost black.... What can I do to maintain the same color on my roots as the rest of my hair. Do I just use a bleach for my roots or you think I should just go to the salon to maintain my roots?

Thank you again for everything,

Linda

I think the safest thing to do would be to get the roots done at the salon. If you want to save yourself the hazzle of doing it yourself.

If you wanna go for dark blonde I think the only safe way to do it is to double process the hair (double process = bleach and then tone)

For bleaching I'd suggest that you go to a beauty supply to get the right products. I'd recommend using Wellite Wellite Speedlite bleach for the roots with 30 volume developer. (Make sure that you get the tools you need to applicate the dye; applicator bottle, colorbrush, colorbowl and so on)

Try to apply bleach just to the dark roots and try to really avoid overlapping onto the previously bleached hair. Leave the bleach on untill the hair is yellow this may take up to 90 minutes (do not leave the bleach on for more than 90 minutes). If you don't reach yellow in 90 minutes I think you should go for light brown instead of dark blonde. Rinse it out thourughly, shampoo 2 times, and dry the hair before applying the dark blonde/light brown dye to the hair..

For toning I suggest that you use a neutral dark blonde dye or a neutral light brown dye, do not apply to the whole hair only to the newly bleached parts of it.

If the ends end midshaft of your hair starts looking dull and the color fades you can refresh them using a semi permanent dark blonde toner :)

Please report back and tell us how things went
