If you're afraid about how a lighter color will look on your hair, then I say go for the highlights. I think highlights two or three shades lighter will look really good on you, just to add some dimension to your hair. I recommend you don't bleach though, given it's not necessary if you only go a couple of shades lighter. Since your hair is already colored, I suggest you get those caps or foils and use Colorfix only where you want your hair lighter. When the color has stripped, you can color them over with a color in the 5's (light brown) or the 6's (dark blonde) with either a 20 volume or 30 volume oxidizer. That will depend on how much lift you got from Colorfix, if you think your hair is light enough and the color you chose is about the same color or darker, then you should get the desired result with a 20 volume oxidizer, however, if you feel like you still need a little lift, use the 30. If you like the results and later want your entire hair colored that color, then you can go for it, but by highlighting it first will make you feel safer and the change will be subtler so you won't get a big shock.
If you feel like going lighter in the future, depending on the color, I recommend you always look into the possibility of only using the oxidizer and the hair dye rather than bleaching it. Nowadays you can lift up to 7 colors without having to bleach. I personally feel that bleaching should be left as a last resort, because it's really tough on your hair and requires a lot more care (not saying that colored hair doesn't). I just say that because I feel the difference between my bleached strands that I have on my hair and the rest of my hair which only has color. Split ends form so much faster where I have my highlights, but now that I'm deep conditioning it regularly (once a week), my hair has improved, but still, I'm growing it out to get rid of them altogether and just have my hair one color, but in case I change my mind, I'll try a higher oxidizer first.
P.S. I must throw in and exception for KellyH though, because her hair looks awesome!
Good luck and let us know what you decided to do with your locks. ^^

Aw, thanks FG! I have to say that I'm deep conditioning my hair about 3 times a week now. I did soooooooo much to it almost 2 months ago, that it concerned me I might have damaged it. It feels great though.....I think I dodged a bullet!
I like the idea of using Colorfix to lighten.....nice suggestion!
i think you'd look great with lighter brown and caramel hilites...I could also see you with the dark base with red panels...really red..it looks great on black hair..

I think some highlights would look great. It would give you something to get you out of that slump. I feel the same way about being a frumpy mommy....and I am the same age. I just dont feel I have the same sexiness I did before I had our daughter, so you are not alone in feeling this way.
Could you go to a spa for a day? and let your hubby watch you little girl. That always makes me feel better when I am having one of those days.

I think you would look awesome with your hair like Tiffani Amber Thiessen's in 2003. It's a light brown (probably a 5.3) base, with medium blonde thin highlights (probably a 7.3). I think the highlights will really bring depth to the hair and make it look awesome any way you put it. If your hair is not colored then it should be easy to achieve the highlights, maybe you won't even need to bleach them, ask your hairstylist about that. My hair used to be jet blue black when I was a kid as well, now it's a medium brown, go figure. =P
I absolutely LOVE this hair color and want it for my hair as well, however since I also thermally recondition it, I can't have the highlights (so sad), but I'm working out ways to someday get there. I'm so talking to my hairstylist about getting this color, seeing the picture reminded me of how beautiful it is. ^^" I'm going to try to look for some more pictures of her with this hair color so you can get all the angles, I had them in my computer but now I can't find them. Hope you like it, I really think it'll look great on you! Good luck and let us know how it turned out. ^^
Okay, here are more pictures so you can look at her hair from other angles. But it's basically that, a light brown with very thin medium blonde (caramel) highlights.
OMG I LOVE IT!!!!!@ LOVE LOVE LOVE IT and she even has the same color eyes i do!!!! i hope we can achieve this...my hair is so dark..3n and 4nb redken EQ
I think your hair looks great now but if you must color it i think you should get caramel color highlights. That would look good with your skin tone too.=)
I think the thiessen look would be good. Perhaps with thick hilites on top.....most people try and go light once and it doesn't work and they say it doesn't look good on them. I think it's all about finding the right light base and some hilites and lowlites to compliment your look. Everybody should try blonde once.
