Do I have to tie my hair up at night? I hate those bonnet things and those head wrap things too they make my head sweat. I currently use a satin pillow case but my stylist says this wont keep my hair in place.....i mean i dont care about having to comb it in the morning because i have to manipulate it anyway when i put my curlers in it.So do I have to tie my hair up in order to prevent breakage or can i just sleep on a pillow case ?

honestly, when I don't have braids, I pin curl my hair and tie it up w/ a satin scarf.  This keeps your hair in place and prevents tangles.  Honestly, it depends on your hair texture and the amount of manipulation you feel like putting up w/ in the morning.  I hear satin/silk pillowcases are good but do what's more comfortable for you...just protect your hair.

If you're really serious about breakage, it would be best to wrap it up.

If your hair is long, not only will it tangle unwrapped, but the friction of it rubbing all night on a pillow case will cause breakage, and I personally lose more moisture in my hair when it's unwrapped.

Satin scarves are more comfortable than non-satin scarves.

I agree, I suggest tieing your hair up at night as well.

I've found that tying my hair up at night makes a BIG difference.  It means I don't have to detangle in the morning and I get less tangles as I think most of my tangles happen at night when unbraided.  I am not sure about the satin, in fact I am suspecting that the elastic around the cap is causing some breakage for me.  If a bonnet/scarf is uncomfortable then just have the pillowcases.

what about a satin or silk pillowcase?  or sheets even?  These fabrics dont pull on the hair and cause breakage.  Have you tried any of these?

oh never mind!  I see where you said you sleep on a satin pillow case.    silly me!  But hey, if the pillow still isn't good enough, try the sheets!

I hear you about sweating all night so what I did was get a looong satin scarf and tied it so the top of my head gets air while holding the rest in place as I sleep. Satin sheets or cases still really isn't enough if you have suffered damage. I mean unless you lay absolutely, perfectly still all night your hair is still rubbing and twisting.

ITA using only the bonnet was not helping me at all the hair was not as tangled but I think the elastic band was causing breakage. So now I wrap everynight with a silk scarf and put my bonnet over that HTH

Some one else on another board suggested turning the bonnet inside out so that the elastic is on the outside.  I thought I'd give that a try before getting the satin pillowcases.
