I was going natural at first but relaxed my hair in February. It was armpit length. It seemed like every day I had split ends. I trimmed it like 8 times. Then last week I chopped it to shoulder length. I stil have split ends and I want to actually get growth. Obviously if I have split ends this bad I must be doing something wrong. What could it be?

Hi Biracialgurl,, im biracial myself so maybe i can
help you:-) first you'd have to tell us what your hair
regimen is,, do u use protein conditioners and so u
deep condition?? how often and what do u use,, how
often do u use heat,, also whats your hair type,, ive
got the frizziest curliest mulatto mess lol and i
STOPPED relaxing my hair 7 ths ago!! and i dont
think ive ever seen it this pretty soft and shiny becuz
im now using the right products whereas b4 i was
ignorant and allowed hairdressers to mangle my
poor hair till it disintegrated:-( ,, you probably have
some split ends becuz of overprocessed hair,, i lost
many inches of hair from this and was left with a sort
fo mullet and it was really truamatizing so its
important to get the right balance of protein and
moisture for fragile hair,, so post your hair regimen
Hair type: 3b some c?, fine strands, last relaxer sept 05, never again!!! current :ap length on sides,,nearly bsl in back, damn those old frazzled ends! I am hair OBSESSED

Also, keep in mind that if you relax your hair, you won't need to process it for as long as it takes African hair to relax or get re-touched as often.

Okay, I put coconut oil in my hair and I wash it before I flat iron it which is once a month. I also get a cholestarol treatment once a month. I put oil in my hair twice a week. I'm 3b/c. I'm planning on relaxing my hair every 3 months. Is that too often for biracial hair? Oh and if you're curious my mom is Indian and my dad is black.
I have no signature.

That's a little too often in my personal opinion.

What you should do is relax it, and don't relax it again until it's almost unmanageable to handle, which on my kinky, curly, completely Afro hair is SIX months. On bi-racial hair, it may (or even should) be longer than that.

So, for bi-racial hair, I would probably relax only once a year.

Also, if you flat iron your hair, that should keep it straight as well...another reason you wouldn't need them so close together.

.....but while we're on the topic.....if you're going to flatiron it straight, you probably wouldn't need it completely relaxed straight anyways. Just "texlaxed" to get the bulk/fullness/frizzies out, but otherwise holding some of wave/curl. The flat iron will get it straight. Again, I have kinky Afro hair, and that works for my hair. So if your hair isn't kinky, I see no reason on having it completely straightened if you're planning on using a flat iron anyways.

You should probably talk to Pokahontas. She has completely natural Afro hair, and ONLY flat irons it to get it as straight as she wears it....so there goes the myth that your hair would even NEED a relaxer to get it straight.

Sorry to but in you guys, but I have a question about this "texlaxer" stuff.

Do you use a regular relaxer for this?  How do you apply it to your hair?

I know you don't comb it through, but do you smooth it any?

Who here has done it?

Is there a drastic change in hair texture?  Will I feel like or look like I've been chemically processed?

Sorry to ask so many questions but I was considering it, but Im still not sure.  You see, I love my natural tresses, but I wouldn't mind minimizing the frizz and boof either.   But I don't want a too drastic change like going completely straight.

And oh yeah, one more question... I stopped getting relaxers 6 years ago b/c they made my hair thinner than I liked, will this "texlaxer" thin my hair because I like thick hair?

Now as it concerns with BiracialGurl....  Im not mixed, but when I did relax, I could hold out getting another one for almost a year (like 9-11 months).

And for the split ends, sweetie I wish I could tell you something better but... A good deep conditioner and always putting moisture to those ends; never comb hair while those ends (or anything else) is dry.

And last but most importantly, just leave it alone.  Doing too much to the hair will stress the hair alone.  I notice my hair grows and benefits best when I just leave it alone and stop fiddling with it.  Which is fine by me b/c Im too lazy to comb it half the time anyways, lol

Hmm,, ur regimen sounds pretty good to me,, and ur
hair tex is like mine even tho ppl with the same tex
can have diff needs,, have u ever tried a
reconstructor such as joico k-pak or nexxus
emergencee?,, these have helped me with my
overprocessed hair,, I am currently seven and
something months transitioning and my hair is
doing great,, becuz i can straighten it beautifully with
my solano sapphire iron no prob,, so i am no longer
a slave to relaxers and the bad effects,, have u ever
considered just going back to ur natural curl and
then straightening when u like with an expensive flat
iron? it has paid for itself many times
already becuz i used to be a slave to salon blowouts
till last october!!

Merisit, I have my hair done by a stylist. I don't anything about chemicals. I just tell her about what texture I would like it, and tell her that I don't want it straight and only want it easier to manage and blow dry sometimes, and she does the rest. I think she uses a normal relaxer and just leave it in for a shorter amount of time, but I'm really not sure. I had it done for the first time last year. And that was the first time I've had chemicals for 10 years (I usually just kept a short natural), so I don't really remember how long it was supposed to be in anyways.

I have pics of my natural and straightened hair in my album if you want to take a look.  If you get a good quality flat iron you shouldn't even need a relaxer.

Since you don't seem to use heat a lot I"m not sure what's causing your splits.  It's probably the relaxer though.  Your hair may not be able to handle it.  Trim the ends regularly and try deep conditioning once a week.  Neutrogena Triple Moisture is good for that or ORS Replenishing pack.  Really baby those ends, moisturize them daily with a good creamy leave-in that dosen't have mineral oil or petroleum.....Cantu is the only one I can think of off-hand, then seal the moisture in w/ an oil.  I use Wild Growth Oil or you could use castor oil, olive oil, coconut oil, etc.  Whenever you use heat make sure to use a heat protectant.  HTH
