I have brown hair that was foiled about 2 months ago.  I am in need of foil again, but thought I would go all over light blonde using a drugstore haircolor.  I've heard that you must be careful when using these DIY products over bleached hair...any thoughts.

I just want to say that i would like to know this too, hope you get help from someone. I want to do the opposite of you, probably go brown in a month or two, once i get tired of my bleached hair.

I say skip the drugstore hair color and go to a Sally Beauty supply for color and developer.  While you are there get a protein filler to use with the color since the bleached parts of your hair will be more porous.

DYI advice
Step 1:  PLEASE read Claude's sticky at the top of the forum.
Step 2:  If professional products are available in your area, do not use drug store products.  Drug store product options are too limited to achieve ideal results.
Step 3:  ALWAYS do a strand test.  Do not experiment on your full head of hair!
Notes
When applying a darker color over bleached hair, you must understand the color wheel (see Claude's sticky) to avoid unintentional results, such as green or purple hair.  (Seriously)
Your roots are not as porous as the ends.  Dye should not be left on the ends for as long as the roots!
If your hair has been dyed and you want to go lighter, do not add another dye.  The existing dye first needs to be removed (via product like colorfix or bleach).  If you don't remove the darker dye, your hair will get EVEN DARKER, rather than lighter.

When going from any blonde to any brown, make sure you buy a brown hair dye with red or mahogany color in it. You will find that without the reds, blonde hair will turn greenish brown. You may require another brown color on top of the first without the reds to achieve your desired brown. Then after that you can fiddle with highlights.
