Yes! Just make sure you see a professional that know what she/he's doing. But I used to assist at a solon and I've seen it done before.

flyguy_jr  - yes you can still hot comb it, but it is best done by someone that knows what they are doing for you plus they can see the top of your head and the back especially.
I had my hair really short at one time, but i bought a 1 inch hot comb because i couldnt afford the h/dresser every 2 weeks but i did get some burns in my neck. OUCH!
 
but i also invested in loads of VIT E capsules and i put them on the burns right away. no scars. phew!
