For about 5 years I've been having semi-permanent dark blond /red color in my (one-time darker brown) now grayish hair. I felt my stylist was too conservative and always wanted to do the same, plus the nice red color always faded after about a week and my hair made me feel old and washed out.

So I went to my husband's hairdresser and asked for a permanent reddish colour. She showed me a colour that was like the one my other hairdresser had been using, so I said yes and we went ahead. What I hadn't bargained for was the dramatically different result & I came home with bright red hair. It's actually quite nice but TOO red, and everyone I meet does a double-take on seeing me. It's just not comfortable.

So has anyone any ideas how I can tone down the colour. I wonder if blondish highlights would help - the stylist wasn't keen and I daren't ask my previous one who'd be horrified! I've been using some brown mousse which I had in, but that just makes it even darker.

You could always use a semi-permanent ash brown color to tone down your red.  What color is your natural hair color, I know you mentioned that it is now grayish, but what other color?  And, don't forget that this color will fade in about one week, and reds overall, have the quickest fade time.  So, don't be freaked out that you will be this bright red color for months on end.  That won't happen.

Wash your hair everyday, it's really the water that strips hair of color, and also try to be out in the sun, b/c that also fades color.  Don't forget to condition also if you'll be out in the sun a lot.  It will protect your strands, but the sun will also do it's fading work.

Goodluck!

**Hair type: 2a, which is wavy and fine.
**Color: Naturally dark brown, currently dyed reddish brown.
**Length: below shoulder length

If all you want to do is tone it down a tad.....wash it with Liquid Dish Soap twice a day. Don't forget to condition, condition, condition though!

I'd say wait a week before you decide to make any changes. Like egj wrote.....it will fade.

Thanks both for your advice. You're quite right too - even today (6 days post treatment and many shampoos later) the color looks less brassy and I've had quite a few compliments so I'll stick with it for now. I'm a bit shocked that the stylist let me leave the salon like that, but on the other hand she's given me the best cut I've had in ages, so I'll probably go back there. Any thoughts as to how I can avoid a repetition of that tricky first week when I get the roots done next?  (Btw my hair is probably mouse with grey - I've been coloring it for so long I can't be sure.)
