I too had the same experience. I am a guy with 32 inches long hair . I often get advices that i should shorten my hair as it looks very feminish. But i am very comfortable with it and i like it.
Just carry on

You said this was your friend? Some friend! I know friends are supposed to be honest with each other, but they're also supposed to be supportive of being who and what you want to be. I think many times short hairs are jealous of long hairs and they try to convice the long hairs to look like them because it's easier than trying to grow their own hair. Long hair is beautiful and sexy and some don't want to take the time to get there. You stay your course and let them worry about themselves.

People can be so cruel. I have an aunt who constantly tells me my long hair makes me look old, and an ex who insists I "need" bangs. Who needs them? Life's too short for mean people and short hair!

Strawberryfine, your hair looks beautiful! I always think that when I look at it so figured I'd tell you. I just love the fine texture, the color and the stick-straight hair. I'd love to see a bigger picture of it. Do you have any you'd be willing to share?

May I just say that it must be difficult for female "friends" who need to be the center of attention to walk alongside the likes of Sugar Cube, Susan W., Strawberryfine, tdouty and others here and see the stares. Now, if the jealous person is *truly* a good friend with a little ego problem, perhaps you gals could choose to wear your hair up when in their company. But *never* heed their hairstyle "hints". You ladies need hair advice from no one, least of all those wearing the latest trendy coifs. If you nicked 'em, they'd bleed green blood! Blessings, Bob

Thanks, Bob. I'll pass that on to Jennifer. I must agree ... there sure is some pretty hair around here. Jennifer's hair wouldn't look or feel as good as it does without the help of this forum. We never would have dreamed of going with a conditioner-only route, but it definitely has made a difference with her hair. So thanks to all in the forum for great support and ideas.

its not that shes jealous its just to many people long hair does look unprofessional.
You can do more with shorter hair andnot have to worry about frying it...
I'm a cosmotologist and in my buisness ass-length hair does look unprofessional.
Our hair helps us sell our services....
Ex: a salon professional with a trendy haircut and color will recieve more clients and look more confident in her own work than a salon professional with very long, untrendy, non-colored hair.
It's the way the world works!
I had very long hair, but now it is shorter with LOTS of layers...I dislike the layers and I'm trying to grow them out....But I do not want my hair to be to long to where it is hard to get body, curl, volume and heat styling....
To each her own!

Professionalism is not defined by hair length. First and foremost, it is defined by behavior -- actions, results, ability to judge and decision, attitude, etc. Appearances are way down on the list, but even then, a clean, neat, flattering clothing and well-groomed hair are appreciated by all. Well-groomed does not equate with short. People who believe that only short hair as professional are, in this regard anyway, unprofessional because their judgment is irrationally clouded by something which has nothing to do with the carrying out of business.

I don't have to worry about frying my long hair. Why do you believe that long hair is necessarily more subject to being fried? (Unless of course, this is what your salon specializes in. I'm not trying to criticize you or your salon, but what salons do to their client's heads does not imply that such treatment is mandatory.)
I think there are plenty here who would claim that you can do more with longer hair. Loose, ponytail, braid(s), bun, and many varieties of the latter 3 categories. Seriously, how many different ways can you style a pixie or a bob?

How about using descriptions such as "hip-length" hair? Or "upper-thigh" length hair?
Describing this length of hair such as you have is crass and derisive, and, I believe, intended to demoralize the possessors of such hair. And just why would you do this? Answer:

Yep. That's what it's all about. Shape the minds of the consumers to the financial benefit of the salons, beauty be damned.
Really, I didn't intend for this to be a rant, but you made it so easy.

It may be a proven formula, but it is not the only way to succeed in the industry (which, by the way, cannot see the forest through the trees). The mainstream salon industry has permanently alienated a large number of potential customers because it takes a one-size-fits-all, cookie-cutter approach to business. The salon industry's clinging to the "long hair is unprofessional" dogma only serves to reinforce its addiction to the standard formula. Very short-sighted.

To each her own!
To each, his or her, own. I agree.

Like it or not....Truth be told, ALOT of women with "ass-length" hair do end up cutting it off when going into this buisness....IT DOES effect their clienteil.
If I wanted a color job I would not want someone with long, blunt-cut, uncolored hair to touch my tresses and many feel the same.
Which would be why my hair is shorter and cut with these hideious layers in it.
In my cosmotology school it used to be a RULE that each attendant had to have hair shoulder-length or shorter and chemically processed.
Okay, people might not want a stylist with bad hair doing their hair but you can have long, shiny, naturally beautiful color and look great!
I don't know where you live or what schools you went to but why would their ever be a RULE that you have to chemically prosses or cut your hair to fit their standards. Doesn't that break the rights we have as citizens of the U.S?
By the way "Ass-Length" ? I wouldn't be surprised if someone kicked yours for that. Their are many more appropriate words.
Oh and according to magizines and tv style shows longer wavy hair is in style right now.

Yikes, Nicci!!! Your ideas confirm everything that I believe is wrong with the beauty industry. Service industries *should* be all about the customer's desires, but your position that more can be done with short hair only tells me that a cosmetology license can be obtained by someone who is clueless about long hair. I don't mean this as an affront to you. I'd be surprised if any beauty school specializes in hair longer than bra-strap length.
As for "professionalism" being bestowed by a short coif, this theory is hogwash. Why did you wear sensationally long hair once, Nic? Because it was stunning. If you are a good stylist, you did not become more "professional" the day your hair vanished. And incompetent cutters are not miraculously endowed with more talent if they themselves go short.
IMO, the reason that major haircuts give some women a confidence boost is because the salon industry has reinforced that this should be so, ad infinitum. All I know is that most times when I see a woman arrive with a "power cut", the hair looks far less attractive than it did before the appointment.
Finally, since my wife has hip-length unlayered hair, if she ever does end her 5 1/2 year salon hiatus, I will be looking for a woman who has similarly long hair. I figure that someone whose hair has survived yearsworth of incessant barbs and makeover suggestions from colleagues must have an extraordinary appreciation of magnificent hair, and would respect DW's length. Blessings, Bob

More CAN be done with short hair...its the way the world works.
Why is soooo many of you advise people against flat-irons and whatever else? "Cause they damage hair"
Well, if you kept your hair shorter you wouldn't have to worry about the damage nearly as much since you cut it off more frequently...You know what I mean. Same with bleaching and whatever else.
Plus shorter styles are MUCH easier to add volume to than ass-length hair that weighs styling/teasing/whatever else down.
Real talk

Most of those women you see in magazines and whatever else HAVE EXTENSIONS which are replaced fairly often and can be heat-styled/colored/bleached frequently.
Didn't you make a post asking why you can't have long straight hair like adriana lima?
