Will Hair Extensions STOP My Hair from Growing?

I was just curious if hair extensions prevents your own natural hair from growing. One day I do hope to have beautiful long NATURAL hair (no offense to anyone who uses extensions as I DO love them but hey I think we all know natural hair might be a little easier). :).

I don't think extensions can cause your hair to stop growing, however if you get damage from extensions, it may seem as if your hair has stopped growing.
 
How to not get damage:
 
* proper installation
*proper care
*don't wear them over 12 weeks

they do not stop your hair from growing.. extentions adhere to your hair, they do not stop growth.

In my experience, improper removal of extensions is way more damaging than the extensions themselves. For that reason, I always use methods that are easy to remove gently (such as pinchbraids, Pro-Tac, etc.)

When I wore pinchbraids (Hairpolice method), my hair grew a ton.

extensions wont prevent your own hair from growing..just like fake nails wont prevent your real nails from growing (otherwise we could just stick the fake stuff on there and be done with it, but since the real stuff keeps on growing it makes the fake stuff grow out with it and we have to redo)

however, some damage can and does occur and you have to decide for yourself if you want extensions enough to live with that. educating yourself about how things should be applied and removed is a vital step in keeping your real hair healthiest under the extensions.

i think if i were a person with just short healthy hair that i wanted to be longer, it would be best to just wait for it to grow or wear a wig.....but since im a person who has always had thin crappy hair that im never happy with, a little damage to it under beautiful extensions really doesnt bother me

oh my, lets see lol.....

first: microrings...i was inept and do believe i brushed too vigorously, but also just sleeping on them always hurt and was pulling out my hair

with each protac install, if there are a few cross hairs stuck in there they get pulled out :(

Liquid Gold....mmmm, im new to using it, and the first removal was horrible, so i did sacrifice some hair during that...but this last time i was able to get a LG weft out painlessly

its been, in my opinion, very MINOR losses of bits of hair, but some people are looking for zero damage and i cant say that i've been able to wear them damage-free

all that said, with each take down i have measureable hair growth over this past year :)

I have to agree with nursie. If you have beautiful healthy hair and you just want longer length, then the best option in my opinion is wait until it grows out.
 
If you have crappy hair to begin with (like me) a little bit of damage is a small sacrifice. My hair is ugly and wimpy no matter what. And as long as I continue to be blonde, I will NEVER have long hair on my own. Its too brittle and dry from lightening and grows to a certain point and breaks off from the damage. So....even if I experience a little damage from the extensions, its no great loss for me.
 
Having said that, I have also seen more improvement in the condition of my natural hair in the past year. Since backing off of bleach, and switching to a gentler method of install, I have seen much improvement. But on that rare occassion when I get impatient with a takedown, or try to takedown fresh LG bonds, or whatever, I have lost a lil' hair!

I so agree with you guys. I don't think I'd risk even a little bit of damage if I had great hair to begin with. But with fine hair that is naturally thin in spots, a little breakage is totally worth having the fabulous hair that you get with extensions.

This was me 15 months ago, with a pixie cut less than 1 1/2" long:

Yeah, I mean, if you are almost there as far as length, you may want to go with clip-ins or wigs. If you really want to grow out from really short to long, and have a way to go, I think what you damage is worth it.

I've only had real damage from my own inexperience and impatience in removal. Sure, you will lose some here and there, but overall, I think my hair is growing better than it did when I didn't wear extensions and tried to grow it out, because I am not spending hours torturing my own hair with irons and heat!

So, like with anything else, you win some, you lose some...You know?
