I think it depends what color you go and how much washout you get.  If you go red or dark, you're more likely to get washed out looking length after a few months that will need to be redyed to look good. 

Blondes don't tend to washout nearly as much.  You would only need to redo the length of blonde if you lose your tone (for instance if you have ash and it starts to go yellow or your roots stop matching when you redo those, then you'd need to do something).  Otherwise, not doing the length unless you need to is the healthiest option.

Well, not being a pro, I definitely can't name you a brand or shade or anything.  However, I used to be golden blonde, and because I didn't use much ash, my hair didn't fade hardly at all, and never needed its length redone unless I chose to change the color.  If you go golden blonde (blonde with more yellow in it, not ash - especially since you say you liked when it went that color on you) it is less likely to fade and will be more easy to get root matching.  The reason is because when hair is lightened it goes through an orangy stage first, then to yellow, so yellow is the natural shade for it to be.  Color has been removed from it (by the pigment getting lightened), but not so much color has been added.  To get ash blonde, a violet or sometimes green tone has to be put on top of the yellow that the hair naturally goes when lightened.  (This green or violet tone is already present in ash blonde dye).  So, if you go golden blonde, it will fade less because there's not as much cover to fade off of your hair.  It is not exactly, but pretty close, to the color it would go naturally just by lightening.
