I was wondering if someone out there can help with a question please. I have a girl who has natural brown hair with heavy blonde highlights (bleach) and her hair texture is straight/slightly wavy.  She does'nt want any fullness added to her hair, just length. Her hair length comes to her shoulders but she wants it to the middle of her chest.I am going to use the pre tipped u-shaped bonds on her but i am wondering if someone could tell me how much hair to order and what length to order and how do i put them in just for the length. Is it the same way for a full head of extensions?I think it might be 14" in length that i would order but not sure,  then she asked if i could cut it into layers like a shaggy look.So my questions are what length do i order and how to put them in for just length only and where can i get shorter extensions. I don't want to have to order 16"lenght and wind up cutting it all up.

                                            Thanks much

Well,  anytime you add extensions you will get more fullness, simply because you are adding more hair on the head.

For most people, extension that will reach down to the bustline  needs to be at least 18".  It depends on their body.  For example, I have a long torso, so 18" extensions come just above my bustline.  14" will not be long enough, and even 16" may not be long enough.

When in doubt about what length to order, keep a tape measure on hand.  I have one in my salon, and we I do a consultation, I place it on the head at the lowest point the extensions will be applied in the back and front.  That way the person can see the approximately length.

You would have to do a full head install to get her shoulder length hair to blend to bra length extensions.  Otherwise, you will be able to see the line where her natural hair is and it will look like  mushroom head.  Furthermore, you will need a full head of hair to keep the bottom from looking stringy.

As for  cutting it into a 'shag', that's a really very layered style with short layers on top progressing to longer layers.  Whether in natural hair or extension hair, a true shag would not extend more than a few inches past the shoulders.

You can however cut long layers into the extensions and I prefer using a razor to do it, since blunt cuts look choppy and fake in extension hair.  When doing layers in long hair (natural or not), you have to be careful that you don't layer it so much that the bottom become thin and stringy.  For that reason, people so wear very long hair don't usually have a lot of layering.

You can layer it around the face and that always looks nice.

For a full head of adding this amount of length, we need to add usually 175-250 extensions, depending on how much natural hair we need to blend in.

Good luck!
