QuoteReplyTopic: Has anyone here ever sewn in thier own extensions? Posted: July 31 2007 at 2:27pm
I cannot find ANYONE near me that sews in extensions. We live in a small city in British Columbia in the summer and I am seriously considering just locking myself in the bathroom for a few hours and doing it myself instead of driving the 4-6 hours to Vancouver or Seattle for my hair. Has anyone here ever just sewn in thier own extensions? I can do cornrows so I'm figuring if I google enough stuff I can figure it out.....
I know some people on here can do their own weaves. That takes talent. Ive heard its really hard to get it tight enough on yourself. Im sure you could do it though but might take some practice. I agree though if you have to drive 4 hours, its not practical because you need to go back about every 6 weeks to have it redone and the dead hair removed like any other method.
Didnt you say you would be coming back to Maine at some point? Im sure Portland or Boston would have someone.
I don't cornrow, or do my own, but I have sewn in extensions for other friends.. It's SUPER easy to do.. Since you cornrow, congratulations on mastering the toughest part of the process.. I would go over to BHM and spend some time reading through the compiled links in the Weaves/Extensions 101 thread.. There's lots of good information there.. MANY of the ladies there do their own sew ins.. Good luck!

what method did you use to sew your own wefts in? I don't think it's all that easy to make cornrows on the back of my head. Maybe you know of a better way? I usually do a take down every 12 weeks. I would greatly appreciate your in put, any help would be GREAT! I have to schedule at least 5 hours for a take down, and new install. There seriously isn't anyone who does braid and sew around here.
MintMocha it stands for Black Hair Media and there is just tons of useful info there about anything hair. I also told you on the shout out but wasnt sure if you would see there.

I braided my hair in horizontal rows from nape to ears and vertical V's from the hairline to the crown leaving hair out like a mini mohawk in the top center to cover the cornrows and sewed the ends down with weave thread. About 5 or 6 rows. They weren't pretty cornrows but they worked. Then I would hold the weft to the cornrow to measure how long I needed it, cut it, then sew it on tacking it down on both ends of the cornrows for added security. Most people I know sew around the weft (which is much easier) but I sewed through the weft, I wanted to make sure that those bad boys weren't going anywhere. When a row would become too loose I would just replace that row.
Are there any military bases on your island? You can check the boards at the exchange and commissary to see if any braiders are advertising there. You may even find someone to hire to work in your shop?
There is no military base with familys stationed there on this island. I would love to find someone to do my weave! Thanks for the thought.
thank you dearie. Is it expensive to take a hop to Oahu. I lived there 20 years ago in Kaneohe Bay.
We REALLY have to work on cutting down your take down/re-install time. Do you have a second set of wefts prepared for the new install, or do you just wash and re-use the one set?

Diva, she may even be able to find someone on her island from Craigslist
So true.. Plus I BET you will find folks near the resorts who do braiding.. Everytime I've gone to one of the more tropical locations there always seems to be women who were braiding hair on the beach..

Yes...so true. I got some of the most awesome braiding done in Jamaica, the Bahamas and in St. Kitts. And yes, they hang out on the beaches near the resorts. The first time I accidentally found a woman and she did a great job but after that, I made a point of looking. Also, I have gotten some great braiding done at the Renaissance festivals here in Texas of all places. :-)
That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger or drives you totally insane. :-)
