How to Turn White Highlights Blond Again?

My highlights were whitesh ashy color from the salon over my medium dark brown hair. So I am done paying for a salon for highlights. I put a box of golden brown hair color on and now they have gotten a tiny bit golder but the color does not hold, as I did not use a filler.  Can I just bleach the highlighted part again or do I have to fill them in and bleach all over? Or can I put a light blonde color on them and have them warm up a bit? I don't want to go completely brown and the highlights are coming through, they are just a bit ashy white.  Any help on what to buy would be appreciated. Or I guess I could spend $75 at the salon and start all over again with another mess? THanks.
