I used Clairol live chat today and they told me I couldn't dye my dark blonde hair to a medium brunette shade with their permanent hair color products. They said that the brunette shades would look too dark on my hair and would deposit too much and look "unnatural".
Is it really a bad idea to use permanent hair color to go darker? Is permanent hair color meant for lightening only? What should I use instead? This is the color I want to acheive:
My hair has only been slightly lightened with a dark blonde semi-permanent hair color so it is a bit porous but not too much. My natural hair color is very light brown.

They were probably right about MEDIUM brunette shades.Did they mention a light brown shade though? Because once your hair is a light brown shade,if it is not dark enough for you,you can always go darker later. When changing colors,it is best to start with baby steps then to go too drastic. Because once it is very dark,if you hate it,it will be that much harder to reverse.
That is a very nice color you have picked out there. I would not say it was a medium brunette shade though.More like a chestnut or light reddish brown.
It is not a bad idea to use permante to go darker. It is just that semi deposits more color because permanate has peroxide (which lightens a little)
