Hi. I'm new to this forum and new to hair color. I'm 20 and 've never colored my hair, for various reasons but mostly because I'm scared of what the outcome will look like. Also every time I go to the salon to get a trim, every hairstylist I've ever been to has told me not to color it cause it's nice as it is...but I'm kind of bored of the same look.
I recently saw pictures of Penelope Cruz's new look, and I looove her hair right now...I would love to get that color. I think it's a dark auburn. I have medium-light skin and dark brown (almost black) hair right now. Anyway...I was investigating online I found a product that matched the look I want (Natural Match by L'Oreal in dark auburn). Since I'm new to hair coloring, when I go to the salon, what should I tell them? Should I take them pictures of the look I want, and can I tell them what products to use? What hair dyes do they use?
I know it's probably a stupid question, but I'm really scared of not getting the outcome I want. Thanks for any advice.

Salons will probably tell you not to,because of the biggest reason~they arent getting paid for it.
I think you have made a good choice with the natural match (although is that a permante color?)
maybe you should start out with a semi or non permante color first.That way if you hate it,it will fade or wash out. I love Natural Instincts.It adds a boost to my natural color,slightly adds some highlights,but does not completely change it.
Also,it is very gentle.My hair is always more shiney and nicer looking after I use it.
Thanks for responding jules! Yes Natural Match is permanent, but I liked the reviews and the color so much that I'll risk putting on a permanent color, even if I don't turn out liking the results. I have another question, how will I know what kind of dye the salon uses? Also, is it true that coloring your hair adds volume to it?
Coloring your hair doesn't actually add volume, in the long run. When the color is applied, the cuticle is raised and the cortex of the hair swells, so it appears fuller. While it doesn't last forever, your hair will look very full and voluminous for the first few days.
It's hard to tell what kind of color each salon uses and, most of the time, they're not going to tell you. I do know that Clairol makes a professional line that can be found at Sally's and it's pretty good, from what I understand. However, I wouldn't recommend that anyone new to haircolor try it. Mixing pigments is an art and science. It's VERY easy to misjudge the pigments you need and end up with something undesirable.
Natural Match looks like a pretty good product and most home color kits will probably work well for you. Your hair is naturally very dark and, if you decide that you don't like the color, you can put a darker color over it very easily. My only advice is to read the directons carefully and do a strand test before you color.

I cannot emphasize this enough. DO A STRAND TEST! I am serious. Do it on a part of your hair that is very hidden, just think enough that you can see the color when you're done (1/2 inch?) Mix about equal parts color with developer (1/2 teaspoon of each should be fine). this is the only way you can be absolutely sure you will like it. Most don't do strand tests and many regret it. Also, pay attention to the time you leave the dye on the strand as this can effect outcome of color. When you do the actual color, make sure to use a heavy lotion on your ears, neck, and around your face to prevent staining. Good luck!
