QuoteReplyTopic: Holy COW! Don`t EVER do this your hair! Posted: July 13 2002 at 3:27pm
Some of you might have guessed by my posts that I am something of a chemistry geek (I do PR for a living but everyone`s got to do something a 2 a.m. when they`re bored.) So I tried something last night. I trim my own medium brown hair--believe it or not with good results--and last night I took off about an inch, no problems or anything. I had all these hair snippets lying on the bathroom counter and as I was sweeping them up, I thought I`d experiment on them.
I took a handful of the cut-off hair, put it in a Dixie Cup and submerged it in some bleach. I know of some people that actually bleach their hair (I HOPE not using cleaning bleach) and I wanted to see what color it would turn the hair. Well I came back in 10 minutes, expecting to see some blond hair floating in the bleach..................but it WAS GONE!!! The bleach completely dissolved the hair! You would never know I had put hair in the cup. There was just a pale liquid left.
I think most people on this board and in the world are smart enough not to bleach their hair (while it`s on their head) but just in case someone gets creative.......please don`t EVER do it! :-)
Have a great weekend.

Well, duh! But I`ve read posts from people who`ve used superglue to put in their own extensions or tried using hydrogen peroxide to color it. People do all sorts of things to their own hair out of curiousity of just plain ignorance. My goal is to warn people of the dangers involved. Cleaning bleach to dye hair sounds stupid to you and I, but to someone with less experience it might sound practical.

Oh, people do use cleaning bleach on their hair. I was in a salon once when a woman ran in with a towel on her head. She has done some kind of home color thing and then tried to get it out with cleaning bleach. As Lyris said, her hair was literally melting. The stylists tried to help her but she ended up with very short, short white hair on her head. It was real sad.

This reminds me of an incident at my greatgrandmother`s home when I was small. My greatgrandmother had javax in the sink mixed with water and was about to do some laundry. As she turned her back this cousin of mine dipped his hair in the water and his hair instantly turned white. He was very small at the time. Of course everyone freak out and his hair was rinse over and over etc again. Child turned out okay and noone ever dipped their head in greatgrandmother`s sink again.
