Highlights can make a big difference.I was starting to really hate my hair (which is pretty much just boring brown) so I added some highlights. The highlights really brighten up my face and make the color not so mousey...because my natural color is NOT my perfect match either,LOL.

Also, when you first go darker it always seems so drastic at first. After several washings it will lighten a little and it wont seem so bad.

Social conditioning subconsciously teaches us (particularly girls) that if we are not groomed, plucked, lean, bleached and dyed then we are ugly. These days it's very hard to find a women over 18 that hasn't had a chemical process done to her hair. You probably don't like your natural haircolour because it seems, well boring compared to what you're used to. Give it time, though, you may grow to love and appreciate it.

However, I really don't believe you are born with your perfect haircolour, or none of us would have any need for hair dye. lol. It exists to highlight and emphasise the hair's beauty, as well as a person's skin tone and eye colour, etc.

Good luck with it all.

i bet you don't look awful in your hair color! sometimes we just convince ourselves that if we dont look like everyone else then we must look bad. i remember hating my red hair when i was in grade school, i started dying my hair dark brown (which looked horrid!) when i was in 7th grade just so i wouldn't be different from everyone else. i know i'm only 21 now, but i LOVE my red hair and i love being different. sometimes it just takes time to love what we already have!

Thanks ladies ,You all make me feel better about my hair deal . i have colored my hair every color there is i think but at the end of it all ,The damage ,the tears, oh so much money spent on dye, stripper, conditioning treatments, and so on .Not to mention frustration but nothing compared to the humiliation i felt those first weeks i speant as a bald woman. All in the name of beauty.I work with individuals w-disabilities and recently we had an acceptance training that got me to thinking . Some of our folks are disfigured ,have some limbs missing or limbs that don't funtion properly some not at all .These folks are some that are the most unaccepted in society and you know what they don't give a damn ! Most don't anyway and they are happy ,Happy with themselves regardless of what hair ,eye or skin color they have .It just doe'nt matter .So i'm sitting in class and i'm thinking "michelle what the hell is the matter with you ?I it seem that i would have so many advantages over these folks due to not having to face the mental and physical challenges like they do . But what i learned was just the other way around. It made me think "hey why can't i do that ? Accept my original look as it is .i do think each of us is born perfect human beings from our hair to our eyes to our skin color and i for one will not argue that with my creator no matter how much dye this poor heads been through and the fact i still am adjusting to this color ..I totally agree with you ally about the social conditioning .if everywhere you look women wer'ent told how they should look and feel maybe those haircolor boys would'nt be a multi-billion dollar industry off of convincing us that we are not good enough if we don't have this years hot new style and color.Shame on me for believing them .Yeah it will take some time to get used to this color but i think you are all right when you say i'll get used to it .I love what you said laceydon about loving what we already have .Thats cool. So many people would love to have your red hair (including me )So i think i will take what i was blessed with and work it baby ! lol .Maybe see what natural highlights the sun will offer me this summer and just see what happens .i just don't want to be a slave to haircolor anymore. maybe losing my hair was a sign and i missed it .However i will still be bugging you all about conditioners and stuff of the sort from time to time lol . thanks for reading my thoughts on the subject . have a great day

LOL
You guys are so insightful, and I have felt the same way alot before.
I do think hair dye companies make millions preying on our insecurities.
Despite how I feel about my own hair,I try to drill it in my daughter's head that she is beautiful how she is and should NEVER dye her hair.Of course if she chooses to,that is up to her.But I want her to know that she doesnt need it and amongst her natural beauty she has so much more going for her.
Hair is just a small part on the whole package. Why do we focus on it so much? LOL..

BTW, Julesjul88 you're so pretty! I love the brown  hair on you. Smile

What's everyone's perfect hair colour for themselves? Right now I'm thinking blonde, but I've liked light chocolate brown on me in the past.

My natural hair color is darkest brown. I always liked my color, never felt the need to dye it. Until I started getting greys! I just hate salt/pepper hair.

When I started highlighting to cover greys, it was a nice change from the dark. I kept getting more and more highlights (addiction lol). My son said "Mom why don't you just dye your hair blonde and get it over with!"

Now, I'm a reddish brown color. Which I like.  But, I probably wouldn't of dyed my hair if it wasn't for greys. Dead Am thinking about getting few face framing highlights this summer to lighten up little.

Love your hair Jules, very pretty.

I hate my haircolor... I think it's too dark and I look too exotic for my taste, or too gothic as I put it... maybe if I tanned it'll look a bit better but I don't... I know my hair is too harsh for my very light skin....
personal choice but I am sure it's drilled into my head from t.v and magazines...

In my opinion, my natural colour is way too dark for my pale skin tone. So I've always gone lighter with my hair. I've never been any darker than what my natural color is(medium brown), except for the time I dyed the underside black. I would love to just go back to my natural colour and save myself the time and money needed for root touch ups and all that, but it just doesn't look right on me, so I think for now I'll just stick with blonde :)
