I have dark brown hair, light skin and blue/green eyes. Can I get highlights or are they just for people with light brown or blonde hair? Or should I get a one process colour instead? I`m not looking to go blonde, I just wnat my hair color to be less flat and not all one tone and a lighter brown so that there`s not such a sharp contrast between my skin and hair colours so I don`t look so wahsed out.

As a suggestion, and depending on your skintone, you could probably get highlights in either an auburn, caramel brown, golden brown,or bronze, medium in tone. If you go too light with your highlights, it won`t look good; it could look like either the dreaded skunk stripes or the equally dreaded "frosted" look! See your haircutter/colorist for a consultation about this - this procedure is best left to professionals.

Maybe she wants to change her hair color for herself, not everyone cares what men think. Sometimes if you have really dark hair and light skin you look sort of scary like Elvira, so I understand why she wants to change. I would recommend a one process rather than highlights. I find highlights on dark hair to be too streaky. With the bleach used in highlights it is hard to control the color and it often gets too light and there is too much of a contrast with the base. Also one process color is less drying than the bleach. I would recommend a one process in golden brown or light auburn. The only problem is that roots will tend to show, so you have to get it retouched every five to six weeks, but to me that is preferable to the streaky highlight look.

What about highlighting, then doing an all-over color to tone it down? I`ve found that looks pretty great...However, it`s expensive & time-consuming to keep it up. It is an option, though.

I`ve seen FANTASTIC hi-lights in dark brown hair! Depending upon the tone of your brown, you can take the hi-lights quite pale and put an ash toner on them -- wowee they look good!

I put hi-lights in my neice`s hair just last weekend and her hair is very dark. It looks really good.

Why do men always think it is about them?

Anyway back to the topic at hand. I have exactly the same features as you, my skin is Olive tone, I forgot if you mentioned yours! I have had auburn highlights and also carmel colored one. I think the auburn highlights lasted longer and showed less roots. You can also try it yourself by using Feria Strands. I don`t like the brush they give you so I just buy a cap at the beauty supply store. You can try a little see if you like it then do some more. Personally I like it because it seems to be less intense than the salon higlights which I have also had. Go for it!
