QuoteReplyTopic: Dry scalp? Posted: November 01 2002 at 5:10am
Hello,
My name`s Jill and I am sixteen years old. I have thick (not just thick hair, thick strands of hair as well) blonde hair. To protect my skin from drying out (it drys out on the rest of my body, especially my face and legs) I only wash my hair every other day. I`ve just noticed a patch of skin behind each ear that is red and spotty like after you shave and your legs get dry. It itches every now and then, but not terribly. Should I be washing my hair every day now? Also, should I use Head And Shoulders shampoo for a little while? Thanks for your input!!!

You might want to make an appointment with a dermatologist to have those patches examined.
The usual cause of conditions such as this is seborrheic dermatitis, a type of skin rash. IF that is the problem, there are things you can do:
-Brush your hair frequently to remove any flakes. -Massage your scalp to improve circulation. -Avoid using alkaline based shampoos. -Try using a jojoba or tea tree oil based shampoo regularly. -Intersperse the jojoba/tea tree shampoo with an over the counter dandruff shampoo once a week: look for zinc pyrithione or selenium sulfide (coal-tar formulas used to be very big but they have their own problems). -Try a final rinse of one cup warm water mixed with two to three tablespoons of white vinegar. This will also bring out the highlights in your hair and make it shiny. -Try an oil treatment in which you massage olive oil into your hair and scalp, cover your hair with plastic wrap and wet towels. Keep the towels on your head for twenty minutes, then remove oil with two washings. -Supplement your diet with foods rich in Vitamins C and B, which promote a healthy scalp, and healthy hair.
Hope this helps. Good luck! ;)

Lovely Jill, Have you tried high quality natural hair products like Avalon or Giovanni shampoos and conditioners? I am a middle aged guy with long healthy hair about halfway down my back, and I, and my two teenage daughters, usually use natural products!
