I think that in very general terms the trend has swung towards being more bold and daring with your hair again. You can see stars like Ciara chopping it off, McPhee going blonde, of course Rhianna doing all the crap she does and the side-head-shavers...
This is a trend that I love. Virtually all the top stars right now have interesting hair that they mix up and do new things with. Great change from recent years where long waves just stayed and stayed and the biggest news we had was bangs that lasted a month.
I can see it on the streets as well. Over the last several months my wife has just decided to be a little crazier with her hair again and is really having fun.
It isn't really a short over long thing, but generally the big changes involve going shorter (unless of course their are extensions) so the long haired lovers are a little dismayed. In general I love people doing new things. My favorite part of the short, short cut is that we get to see it growing out over a period of time in different styles.

I agree Trout and it's great to see, bold cuts and colors are back. it was getting boring for a bit. I like long hair but it has to have some great color
