I currently have dark brown hair with about half hinch natural mousy blonde root re-growth and an hinch and half of slightly lighter brown hair were my color was done last time and didn't take so well.

Previous to this my hair as been bleached blonde, then dyed bright red and finally copper.

I will go to the salon if I have to but I'm wanting to do it at home just because it's cheaper and I only want a slight change of color.

I want to achieve a dark golden brown and have been reccomended the L'Oreal Excellence Creme in 8.1 which I believe is ash blonde, will it lift evenly from root to tip or will I have bright blonde roots?
I know color doesn't lift color but I've seen people with previously colored hair and it's worked it purpose, I literally only want one maybe two levels of lift.
Will it damage my hair has it's a box dye and professionals say they are bad for you?

The dye will only lift your virgin roots. If you use it to lighten the processed ends you will disappointed as it will not work. First you need to use a colour remover (Colour Zap or Color Oops are both readily available) then apply to colour after.
