One of the most stressful experience in society today must be the job interview.
People are wary of making a bad impression and take special care of their
appearance. Unfortunately, this has included men with long hair cutting it out of
fear that a conformist interviewer will reject them because of it. Can anyone
share their or someone else`s experiences of themselves or some other man
being hired for a decent white collar job (mainstream business, teaching,
government etc) even though they had long hair at the interview? Specific
examples would be much appreciated.

I don`t know what a "white collar" job is, and I did mention this in another thread, but felt it more appropriate to go here.

DISCLAIMER : Each boss is different. Take this example as a possibility, but not the main path.

Pharmacy interview to become a lab worker - May 2002:

You know that a student has to go around at all sorts of places to drop off resumes and hopefully get a call back to get a job. Well, on the rare occasion you meet the boss and he isn`t busy, he will pop you up with a direct interview, no lag.

*Browses my resume...*

"So, I see you have experience in the workplace and stuff, so I`ll ask you a few questions:
...
motivations to work here?
...
would you have a problem wearing a labcoat, and underneath, business shirt and tie?
...
would you cut your hair if you were to be employed?"

Bombshell right there. You can fantasize all you want the week before about how you`d react to that question like telling the boss things like "yes, no, stick your job where the moon don`t shine, etc..." but when it`s actually asked... you have about 1.4 seconds to get an answer out.

If it is a necessary condition, I`d have to consider it then. I would prefer to keep them though.

My hair were in a neat ponytail that day (they are everyday, since loose on me looks bad.)..... did that have an impact on his decision ? Apparently, bleh, I don`T know. If you ask for a job when you look like a slob, don`t count on it. However, I was clean in appearance.

"Just wanted to see a response from you under fire. Two reasons I asked it was that one, you`re going to be dealing with the sicker 1% of the population. You can think what you want afterwards, but a sincere and polite tone is a necessity."

And what was the other one ?

"Believe it or not, but I had long hair until I was 34 (I don`t know his exact age though. I`d guess 50. In Quebec, there was a time where mullets ruled (hockey addicts) and all-long was seen as a mullet variation , totally acceptable) And I don`T know when, but when I`ll call you up, the lead pharmacist will ask you different questions, and you should start soon after that"

One week passed. I called back. He told me he made no decision yet. Apparently, he did, someone else got hired since I went. One week after that, when that employee was doing routine stuff at the office, she hears the boss say "maudit, qu`il est intelligent ce gars-là" (damn, this guy`s bright...). She tells him that if I`m that smart I should be hired. He reaches for the phone, but before he picks up, it rings. It`s me. I`m desperate, he`s willing, and I still have hair on my head.

Met the pharmacist and he had longer hair than me. o_O
Welcome to reality, when you meet the right people, they`ll make the right choice.
I hate all of the following and lots more : Fundamentalists, racists, sexists, fascists, ageists (people saying seniors = senile , kids = stupid , 18 = immature or a combo of them), and bigots for causes yet to receive their own designation.
