Many thanks to all for the suggestions - She liked the Martina McBride look in particular which was very similar, although she did baulk at the prospect of going as short as Alysia Milano's look. I think the stylist would have had a lot of work to convince her about it - if she thought it would be better than what they both agreed on. We had also both forgotten about Sharon Stones varying looks.
I bleieve that in the end she decided that since she was losing so much length she may as well go the whole hog and change the colour as well.

Unfortunately, referenceing Madonna videos has me completely lost. If there are any pictures that are close to it on any websites, you could just post the link, maybe?

Still haven't fathomed out pictures but I'll let you know what happened.
As her original appointment was for a cut and colour she phoned the salon earlier in the week to check that they would have sufficient time for a complete re-style, which the junior stylist confirmed was OK. She also told them that she had pictures of short styles that she liked.
On arriving at the salon her stylist asked how she had coped with the shorter layers she had cut in during her last visit. After replying that it hadn't solved the problem she realised that the above message hadn't been relayed to her stylist who was still completely unaware of my wifes intention to go short. On explaining the situation along the lines of "I'm not leaving here today until you cut my hair short" and showed the stylist the pictures of her favoured styles. Thankfully the stylist agreed that short hair would be a good option and was achievable within the alloted appointment time. She only rejected one picture on the grounds of it being too dated and very 1980's.
My wife then futher shocked the stylist by asking for blonde highlights rather than the red colours she had been wearing of late. Again the stylist remained unphased and agreed that this was achievable.
At the end of the appointment my wife emerged with short blonde, brushed back hair similar to Madonna's style in the dancing sequences in her "Open Your Heart" video, having commenced as a shoulder length brunette.
At the end of the appointment the stylist told my wife to live with the style for a few weeks before returning for any necessary adjustments at the next appointment. She also suggested that keeping the new style but cutting it shorter still would suit her. Considering her hair is now no longer than 2-3" it could end up very short.
Both my wife and I adore her new style and I get the impression my wife is seriosly considering going with the stylists recommendation of going shorter still next visit.

Some of Sharon Stone's short hairstyles have been pretty nice (when she gets someone else to style them). Martina McBride (the country singer) also looks very fabulous lately with her new 'do.

First of all good for your wife! I love the idea of a lovely lady going from long to short hair! I agree with my lady Jasmine that Alyssa Milano wears an ideal short style for a woman. Halle Berry is another example. Madonna has worn so many hairdos over the years that I'm not sure which style of hers you are refering to. Do you mean a short bob like in the movie CHICAGO? Or more like a short pixie? Madonna has worn both of those hairdos. Whatever the case may be, I wish your lady the best of luck with her new short hairstyle!

My wife has booked herself in for a re-style next Saturday (currently shoulder length - going short).
She quite likes Madonnas look from the "True Blue" era but wants to know if anybody can suggest a celebrity with a more modern version of this style & preferrably bruneete rather than blonde.
