OK, well I`ve pretty much decided to cut it, New Years Eve, by my friend, up to my shoulders. I will be chopping off probavly about 2 feet of hair although I havn`t measured, and its gonna look completely different. I also have decided that I am gonna leave it pretty much the same when I go to the salon, rather than going with layers or a heavily styled look. I am really not worried about what nI will be able to do with short hair, cause honestly being able to do nothing with it may be a relief, and styles may take an hour rather thn many hours. My other friend said i could cut her mid back legnth hair up to her shoulders too, but the condition is that I have to keep my hair above my shoulders for an entire year, and not even start to grow it back for a year, and I don`t know about that. But I`m about to be a short haired girl, hopefully I can find a way to drink that night to relieve the stress of doing it finally. lol.

Hey, that`s great & I understand what you mean. Yeah, New Year`s is a great time to do it. To me, I think the two best times are around New Year`s & the beginning of spring. New Year`s because, it is a new year, so a good time to try a new look, as I`m sure is your thinking. Also the beginning of spring, because it is about, beginning, renewal, & rebirth, so it kind of fits there to. Of course there is never really any bad time to do it. LOL. Anyway, I`m glad to see you taking your time & thinking it through, although it sounds like you are just about ready. So good luck, & let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.

I think I have decided to let my friend Amanda cut my hair. We are really close and I trust her and she used to have long hair about a year ago which she cut and has been going shorter ever since. I think I might go have her cut it off a little above my shoulders and just straight across and just keep it simple. Its gonna be so wierd if I do though, my hair is sooooooo long and its gonna be sooooooo short. Like its kinda scary right now I am the girl with the real long hair and I won`t be if I cut it. I dont know how that will effect things. But if I do I havn`t set a date yet although i might do it around New Years if I do, I`ll keep you posted.

Maybe. I can understand your feelings. You could possibly do it yourself depending on what length you wanted to cut it. However, getting a friend to do it would definetly enable you to get it cut to whatever length you chose. Be careful though because you want to make sure it is done straight & even. I have heard of a few at-home-haircut horror stories. However, if it is done slowly, & carefully this will probably not be a problem. If you wanted to cut it yourself I would say the best idea is to put your hair into a ponytail, & cut just above, where the tie is. I`m not sure just an idea. If your friend does it, you have a lot more options.

If I were to do it at home, would I be able to do it by myself just til I could go to a salon to have it fixed up, or should I have a friend do it. I just would rather not have someone I don`t know cut all my hair off. I would want to, or at least one of my good friends.

Well, ultimatly the decision of whether or not to cut it is up to you, however, this could be a decision you regret if you don`t cut it as well. It sounds like you really want to, you`re just not sure how you should do it. You are expected to be nervous & there is nothing wrong with that, however, we are forced to do things every day that we may not be really for & make us nervous, because we have to. Well, you don`t have to, but you shouldn`t let your nervousness rule your life or your decision. I`d suggest, finding a style you really like, probably nothing too short for starters. You can always go shorter later. Ask some friends to come with you to offer support. They could encourge you, perhaps hold your hand, etc. This way you may feel more comfortable. Finally, make sure you are really comfortable with the stylist before doing anything. If the stylist makes you feel uncomfortable then leave, & try someplace else. Remember it is okay to be nervous but you really shouldn`t let it control your decision. I hope this helps you a little bit. If none of this feels quite right, perhaps you are just not ready, & need to wait a little, but only for a little bit. You never know, you could really like it & wish you had done it sooner. If you have any questions, feel free to email me.

Hi Jen, I know exactly how you feel! I had long hair until a couple of months ago when my friends and I cut each others and then went to the salon. Check out my threads on previous pages, pages 4 and 5 I think. They are in my name. If you want to go short then I think you should go at least chin length but only go there if you really want to, don`t let anyone else decide.
If you do decide then ask your friends if they fancy joining you. When we did it it was the most fantastic experience and I don`t think I would have done it on my own. Let the people on this site help with suggestions for a short style. There are many in the gallery. Good luck and if you do it let me know every detail.

Hi Jen,

I have several pictures of girls going from long to short at my web site. If you want to check it out, maybe it will help you with your decision. I also buy hair for extensions, so if you do decide to cut your hair, I could pay you some cash for it. Drop me an email, before you cut your hair, if you`re interested. The URL to my web site is: http://ixpres.com/hair

Oh man, today I swear I almost did it myself. I was in the bathroom about 2 hours ago and I looked at it and I got like this urge to. i actually looked for a pair of scissors but couldn`t find any and by the time I did I decided against it. I don`t know if i would have anyway, although I want to and doing it myself next time i get an urge might be easier than making an appointment and having time to think about it. Cause once it is cut you can`t go back so then i could just go get it fixed a little and it would be fine. Anyway I`m looking for feedback i`m real close.

Jen

Hey, my name is Jen and I am 17 years old, 5'3" with long, dark hair down to my thigh. I cut it to my shoulders in 6th grade and have not had a haircut since then other than to trim split ends off only once oin a while. Ihave wanted to get my hair cut a few times but I havn't. I even came real close the one time i made an appointment last year to have it cut to about my shoulder blades but i canceled cause I wasn't really sure. Anyway i think i wanna cut it all again and i need suggestions. Should i cut it? and if so how short? Thanks.

you seem to want to cut it so why dont you it would make a change and it is afteral just hair and it will grow back .I say cut it really short(chin length) and then go from there. That way you will not always be wondering should i have gone shorter and if you dont like it there are lots of different styles you will be able to try while you are growing it back. But belive me once you have had it short you will never want to go really long again, mostly you will get it to you shoulders and feel it needs a decent cut.helpful??

i say cut it jen. u will never know if u dont do it. i do envy u for having such long hair. it sounds very pretty. but im sure it takes a lot of time to keep it so especiaaly in the morning.
i got talked into a spiral perm and it took a few weeks to get use to it. ido like the spirals and all. i`m glad i did it but now i`ll let the perm grow out. i keep my hair a little higher than my shoulder blades. but i experienced a spiral perm and now i`ve tried something different. try cutting it a little longer than shoulder length. i know one thing u will find that ur hair has more bounce and lift.
and gmoney i know u meant as a compliment. hair that length is amazing even to another girl. good luck.........keep all of us informed.

For what it is worth Jen, I think that your hair sounds absolutely amazing. I personally think that girls look much sexier with long hair and would suggest you keep it down around your butt length. There is something so amazingly alluring about a girls long hair swishing across her butt as she walks!

I think you are brave & definetly think you should cut it. Esspecially if your hair has always been long. It will be a good change & now is the right time to do it. How short are you thinking of going? You seem to mention shoulder length a lot, is that where you`d cut it to or just what you`d done in the past? I know of those who have done it both ways. I can understand those who go short in stages, but, as you pointed out, they need to be careful not to get stuck in a longer stage. I also know those who have chopped it all off at once. I have seem positive & negitive reactions to both. Basically it is your decision to make. I`d love to help you out further. Perhaps if you let me know I could give you some more advise. Whatever you do, good luck!

Well, I would go in steps, and its a good idea. But once I cut maybe up to my waste I`m not gonna wanna cut anymore. I don`t know why its just how I am. Even if i want to it will be shocking just to do that. The whole thing is the change all at once that is intreging, and its probobly the only way I`m gonna get to have short hair. i like my hair, and a lot of people would probobly want me to keep it long. But it seems a lot more in to have a short/medium legnth style and it looks good on almost anyone. i know people would like my hair and it would give me a change and I would probobly look pretty good. Has anyone been in this situation, if so what did you do. if you cut it, how short and did you like it? Thanks.

Many will have opinions on what you should do and some have/will share their experience - which I think is helpful. The fact that you keep thinking of it probably gives you a key as to what you want to do. In your case, what I did with my girlfriend, probably would work for you. We would just cut a few inches at a time every 2 - 3 weeks. Once we hit above the shoulders she stopped for awhile and kept it their. It has varied a little since then but has never gotten to her shoulders again. Right now it is about chin length in a layered, flippy, sexy style.

go 4 it !! i too had long hair and wondered and was nervous about cutting it short but when i did i felt like it was one of the bestest things i could have done i got it cut to a chin lenght kinda bob except mine was very very layered so it kinda looked like it had layers all the way down/across?? it was parted in middle and i have full brow line fringe .i was thinking of letting it grow so i would have this style that every one is yapping about 4600. i have had a fringe for about 4 yrs now and i would not be with out a fringe ever again,i had whispy fringe/bangs to start with but found full width and brow line length were best.hope you find this of some help ,all the best ***rebekah***
