ok so this is coming from a biased diehard Britney fan, but what i think looks fantastic is when you crimp sections of your hair. Maybe 1 centimetre sections randomly (about 5) around your head. Looks especially good with originally straight hair and blonde or streaked hair, as you can highlight the streaks this way. Whatever you do though, don`t add beads or sparkles cos this just screams "trashy teenager!"
What i like to do with my ponytails is wrap hair around the elastic and then straighten the ponytail. looks very glamourous.
Another thing i love to do is i put half my hair into a bun and then pigtail the rest, or tie my hair low on the side of my head and turn the pony into about 4 small plaits. Another thing i love to do isplait my hair to the side and wear a hat, like a beret or one of those cute old man style caps (for lack of a better description.

well, if your hair is layered, why don`t you just work with the layers. flip your hair out with a curling iron and pull half of it back. it`s simple but looks great. also, try pulling it back into a pony tail and then, using a smaller iron, spiral small pieces of hair until you`ve got a mass of curls coming out of the back of your head. there is so much more you can do.
*grabs a ruler* my longest strands are about 8 in. from my ear lobe... but my hair is layered all around... just random nonsense layers! ...and it usually just sits straight on my head, plain ol` hair
