It really depends on the person... Personally, my damaged hairs "repair themselves" after two inches. Meaning, only the first two inches of any of my damaged strands really looks bad. Then it straightens itself out. Good luck and with time, your hair will help itself. Oh, and I forgot to say, it will help A LOT to eat right, especially lots of protein, and take your vitamins.

Depends on what you mean by "bad cut". If you mean too much cut off, then that's just cutting off your progress. Your hair still grows (since the root wouldn't be damaged) but you wouldn't notice growth.

By cutting off "damage", I meant split/dry/matted ends and stuff like that. When the hair ends are damaged, your hair breaks off anyway... and that's even more loss of progress than an itty bitty trim. It's better to start growing with healthy hair.

so basically, you'd cut your hair to keep it healthy so that it wouldn't break off while growing.

Since you have short hair, why don't you have a trusted friend go through your hair and snip off damage... one by one if possible. It's like Dave says, "search and destroy". Be sure to use very sharp scissors like hair scissors or sewing/craft scissors.

Hey IrishEyes

Thanks for responding

(1) Gel fools people into thinking their hair is hydrated, while it only looks that way. Longterm gel use doesn't maintain the health of your hair--Good conditioning does. You could try a leave-in conditioner... the Paul Mitchell leave-in especially, it has an effect that is gel-like.

(2) "Haywire" hair.... It depends on what you did with your fine hair, namely the bangs. If the bangs have been gelled daily, then that's where the damage is coming from. The truth is, NON-gel users don't get this problem and people with long healthy hair don't use gel. It's really your choice. If you love your gel, then you trade that for growth. Whatever floats your boat.

(3) Hats are not necessarily bad for hair. Hats to protect hair from sunlight are good.
(a) but yes, too much friction slows down hair growth .. so you're definitely right about that.
(b) Ultraviolet light from sunshine breaks down bonds in proteins (which is what your hair is made of) so you want to avoid a lot of direct sun exposure.

So anyway.... be sure to be gentle with your hair, snip off the damaged/matted/split ends (VERY IMPORTANT!), and condition condition condition like crazy. Take lots of good care and your hair will grow.

Good Luck

Okay... If you want to grow your hair out, then no more dyeing your hair. Any chemical that you put in, will add more damage. Damage can either (a) make the hair break off after a certain point, so that it doesn't look like it's growing, or (b) force you to trim the damaged ends. If you want to solve your cowlick problem for good, there are things you have to know about growing longer...

For maximum growth:
(1) No more gel. Gel dries out the hair and causes damage in the long run, making it hard to grow out your hair.
and likewise, no more dye. Like I said, dye also damages your hair in the long run.

(2) A cowlick only exists until a certain length. After a few inches, it will definitely go away.. especially since you said you have fine hair. Bangs sometimes grow slower than hair in the back or on the sides.. like my own bangs. They grow at half the speed of my sides and back. Depending on what you like, you can cut the back and sides to "keep up" with your bangs length (even it out).. or you don't have to.

(3) All of your hair will grow.. but you have to take good care of the whole thing. Condition well, maybe do a pre-wash coconut oil treatment, and make sure to wear a hat in the sun.

Your shampoo and conditioner sound fine otherwise. And about the tiny hairs in front.. I have them too. Personally I think it's a good sign, that your hair IS making progress.

Hello IrishEyes

(1) Hair grows an average of 1/2 inch a month, and new hair comes out from the roots. In the summer your hair grows slightly faster. If you cut more than 1/2 inches per month, you won't notice any increase in length. To grow six inches it takes about a year, plus or minus a bit--depending on your hair routine.
If you plan to grow out your bangs to the same length of the rest of your hair, you'd be cutting the back and sides frequently. (You'd skip cutting the front, of course, except for very small trims maybe)

(2) Some people's hair gets lighter in the summer, depending on your hair color... So that may be why you have "highlights" still. If you dyed it in 2001, then it technically should be gone by now (assuming you've been cutting your hair the past three years). It's probably the sunshine or if you go swimming.

There are some things I would like to know:
- do you have thick/thin hair
- do you have coarse/fine hair
- are you curly/wavy/straight
- what color hair
- how long are the back and sides
- describe everything you do to your hair: shampoo, conditioner, styling products, chemical processes, styling tools, etc..

If you're not too fond of that "cowlick".... these things only stick around when your hair is reasonably short. With 5-6 inches of hair though, the lick will weigh itself down, so I say grow it out to about that length : )
