Hi Ally, I have found that my fine hair has become less crazy as it has become longer. You're right, the slight weight of the length seems to help as it gets longer. Yours is probably breaking over your shoulders and that is why is appears disheveled. Mine is down to mid-back now and is just getting to the point that I like it. I had many thoughts about cutting when it was at your length but thankfully I held out. I also know what you mean about splitting and breakage. I don't even put my hair in ponytails anymore except for a special occasion, because it just can't take it, even with a covered elastic. When I have to put it up, I use either a butterfly clip or roll it into a bun while slightly damp and pin it with body pins only. Another discovery I made to avoid bands around my hair is hair sticks. They look like they wouldn't stay in, but if you follow the directions and practice, they really do. Another trick I use often is from an interview with a famous hair stylist. I take one drop, I repeat ONE, of baby oil (the one with aloe and vitamin E)and rub it between my palms. Then I smooth my palms over the parts of my hair that need it. Usually from about the middle to the ends. Works like a charm. Best leave in conditioner I have ever found! This seems to make my hair much more resilient and less flyaway looking. Over that sometimes I will use a light spray with silicone like "Johnson's no more tangles," to smooth the cuticle and seal in the oil. This does have a "cone" in it, so you may have to use a build up remover periodically, although I have not found that I needed one.
Dawn--I, too, was touched by the "outpouring" on this thread. I now make it a point to compliment every woman I see with very long, pretty hair. Who knows what some other tactless creep has said to her during the course of her day? Now, since I have the attention of the appropriate people, I wanted to ask a few more fine-hair questions. :)1) Has anyone found a product that can improve fine hair's tensile strength (elasticity)? I'm excruciatingly careful with mine, but it still breaks easily.2)I'm growing out my fine, wavy hair. It's just beyond my shoulders now and still has some long layers. It seems that 5 minutes after I brush or comb it, my hair always looks disheveled again. (It "separates," if you know what I mean.) Most of the time, "bedroom" hair is not a problem, but sometimes I'd like to look a little more polished. The question is, does fine hair become more manageable as it gets longer? I'm sort of hoping the extra weight will tame it and make it "hang" better. Thanks! Ally
Well said..it's wonderful when women can get together and support each other and find a mutal common bond. Also, I must compliment you on your hair because for letting it grow for so many years with no cuts or trims..it is in great shape. It shows you have taken very good care of it. I am amazed at how even it seems to grow.. I think the pics are very good of you. I would love to see Karen post some new pics of your hair.. I can understand why you get so many compliments.. I admire your attitude towards your hair Dawn..
