Mic, Anyone who thinks that it is unmanly for men to wear hair acessories should have watched World Cup Soccer. There were stretchie hairbands, tooth hair bands, pony tails galore. The winning goal by the French team was scored by a French man in a ponytail. This is a very macho sport with players wearing every hair accessory that is practical. I would stick to hair accessories that are plain and in the same colour tones as you hair and people will probably have to look twice to see what you are wearing. Or wrap a bandana or do-rag arond your head to keep hair back. On the popular show Nikita a charachter name Michael wears his hair back Samurai style. He's macho and cool. Go for the accessories and wear them with confidence. You are at the beginning of a trend.

What is reallly wrong> about it?I certainly can't understand why people have a problem with it! My younger brother has long hair, and he doesn't want to wear anything to hold it back because he's afraid he will be teased even more than he already is. (He's 11. Kids that age will tease each other given any excuse, so his long hair gets him a lot of grief to begin with.)Maybe you could try something with a very masculine design - maybe a stretchy headband that matches your clothing, or a leather tie-back of some sort? I don't think those plain accordion combs would really be a big deal (by this I assume you mean those circular ones with the teeth that point inward, the kind that can stretch into a larger circle).I'm a grad student in molecular biology myself, so I understand the need to hold hair back while working! (You should hear some of my stories about hair and experiments! I won't even mention the close calls with the bunsen burners...) I only know one man with long hair who is in science, and he always wears his hair in a plain ponytail with a plain elastic. Some cultures are not so negative about ornamentation on men's hair. Perhaps you could look into Native American traditions for some inspiration - people would perhaps be less likely to give you a hard time if you can tell them something interesting about the hair ornament.Good luck!Laura Jane lswanson@sunflower.bio.indiana.edu
Hey Mic, I agree with you, men should be able to wear just as many hair accessories as women. My fiance's hair is always getting in his face (he's a carpenter), and he wouldn't touch a headband! You should wear what ever you want! The guys that make fun of you for it probably want to do it also, but are afraid of being made fun of themselves! I think its pretty cool Mic Amber> What about men wearing hair accessories?> I'm a painter and find that a plastic tortoiseshell> headband with little combing teeth works wonders> with long hair?
