Brushing is one of those personal things - what works varies from person to person. I find that brushing is best done as little as possible. I do all my detangling with my fingers (which takes almost no time at all if you have straight hair that is in good condition and are careful with it), and brush only a little bit. I use a smooth plastic brush - boar bristles won't go through my hair (very fine strands, but lots of them). Generally, I brush once after I've applied oil to my hair, once some time later (right before I shampoo), and occasionally a time or two during the day if I'm putting my hair up (although I often don't bother brushing before making a bun or braid, as finger-detangling does the job quite well).Other people have different strategies. Some experts (George Michael, in particular, if I recall correctly) recommend brushing a lot. Others (Philip Kingsley, for example, and this one I'm sure of) recommend brushing as little as possible. Since Kingsley's other suggestions and explanations are more in line with the actual scientific data, I'd take his word first any day; however, what's most important is what works for your hair.I actually tried brushing 100 strokes a day, and ended up with terrible breakage and damage from it. I've also found that massaging my scalp before (and while) I wash my hair does a lot more for it than brushing.Try different things and see what works for you. Whatever you do, though, do it gently - being rough with your hair will definitely damage it.Good luck!Laura Janelswanson@sunflower.bio.indiana.edu

You should work up to a schedule of brushing your hair. I have found that brushing is an art and it varies from person to person. It is great for spreading the sebum and making your hair stronger in the long run. At the present, why not alternate between a paddle-style and the boar. The latter can be harsh. The number of strokes is not that important. Your hair should tell you when you have had enough:) From experience, you should be getting less and less hair in the brush once you are on a schedule unless you are going through a shedding period. If this is not the case, maybe brushing is not really great for your hair. My mom had very fine, silky, thick hair in great condition and she rarely brushed her hair. Her hair also had super shine and grew like wildfire. For your dry ends, use a little jojoba oil on a daily basis. I love the stuff. It is very close to sebum's properties and does not cake or irritate. You might also try a weekly hot oil treatment with the same or olive oil. Olive oil is heavier and really gives your hair a blast of elasticity.Take care and all the best,Jade21

Well...First off it is true that brushing your hair can be good as it stimulates the scalp and distibutes your hair's natural oils through to the ends making it shiny and softer, however.....Brushing overzealously every night without taking precautions to minimize damage can reak havoc on thin, dry hair such as yours.. or in fact any type of hair. Imagine a delicate elastic thread being pulled and pulled for ten minutes every night.. now don't you think this would weaken the elastic or worse yet.. break it completely? Well the same applies to your hair. Especially if your ends are dry. I would suggest that you start a reconstructive conditioning treatment at least once a week if you're not already using one. (Joico and Sebastian make good ones) Then you may want to limit your brushing out to just before you shampoo to stimulate oils and remove excess buildup. Normal styling is fine as long as you are gentle. If you absolutely must brush out please don't do it every night for a period as long as ten minutes and I suggest you use a leave in. (Aveda Elixir, Sebastian Potion # 9, and Redken Details are good) I hope I was of some help and good luck.ThanksKeth'ryn

I have medium length, fine layered and colored hair that I am in the process of growing out. I brush it with a natural boar bristle brush every night for 10 minutes or so before I go to bed and the other night, I was in a hurry and I seemed to catch some hair in the brush the wrong way and it felt like I ripped a clump out. Everything appeared fine other than having a sore head, but I was wonering if it is alright to brush like this every night? I heard that it was very good for the hair and scalp and it seems to make the hair grow faster as well. Also, my ends are quite dry. Thanks in anvance!
