I was wondering if this> damages hair or leaves a buildup?Hi, Mary!I have never read about using tea for highlights, but I think that it is very possible if you can section your hair properly.My grandmother used to use tea to darken her platinum blonde hair before she started using a temporary color. She liked an auburn color at times and the tea worked very well. What I do know is that you have to brew the tea quite strong. Be sure to use a black tea and I think I remember that it takes best when applied at room temperature or slightly warm, but not hot definitely. Your hair should be damp as you mentioned.The tea does not leave a buildup and certainly does not damage the hair in anyway near what even a temporary color would. Just take care of your hair regularly. I have to say that you have to do the tea thing regularly to maintain the coloring effect.I had asked a question a while back to everyone here about how to get rid of too many red, almost blonde, highlights from the sun this past summer. My hair is dark brown and I felt like the lighter color made my hair look uneven in color. Unfortunately, nobody could help me. Anyway, until my hair gradually got darker, I did the tea thing in certain areas of my hair and it certainly helped.Hope this helps...All the best,Jade21
