OOh yes it is best to detangle under running water. I'm speaking as one with African American hair that is unprocessed. If I didn't detangle under running water I don't think I could detangle at all. One other thing I do is to add the Mane and Tail Conditioner and let it sit in my hair for a few minutes (2-3) then detangle with that running out of my hair under water. This really makes a difference and was introduced to me by my aunt. As everyone else has stated start from the bottom, when you feel a tangle try and use your fingers to work through it gently not tugging and ripping. Also because my hair is natural I braid it in the shower and squeeze excess water out of the braid then in front of the mirror I gently undo the braid and add more conditioners and oil before braiding it up once again.I'm still learning how to deal with this head of hair God gave me but it helps to read this web thread and see how everyone else does it too. Everything doesn't work for everybody but you never know what you might come across that works for you. I actually learned about detangling under water from a biracial friend of mine who's hair texture is similar to mine. She had moved to Spain for awhile and of course had no one to do her hair so she started growing out her relaxer. In 9 months her hair went from above the shoulder to lower back. I was so impress but what she did was minimal styling and only combing under water. She didn't realize she was helping her hair she only knew she didn't have the time to deal with it.
After shampooing, I squeeze out the excess water and then start to detangle. With my fingers near the scalp I I divide my hair into about 8 sections. I don't worry about detangling at this point, I just want to divide my hair into smaller sections so its easier to work with. If I encounter a large tangle, I just put it all together in its own section.I then add a little bit of conditioner to one section, concentrating on the ends. I don't use any special detangling stuff, just whatever conditioner I normally use and wash out. I use Pantene Pro-V,I "finger comb" the section, always starting at then ends and slowly work my way up to the top. Once I have gotten to my scalp, I use a large pick, to further detangle. Once agian, I start at the bottom and work my way up. I find a pick works better than a wide tooth comb. I use one of the large plastic ones, that I believe were originally meant for afros, not the small metal picks sometimes used for fluffing hair.I repeat this for each section. My hair reaches my lower back, and I use about a dime size amount of conditioner per section, more if its heavily tangled. Once I have finished each section I then use a wide tooth comb, to bring all the sections together and then style in whatever matter I want.If the hair is extremely tangled, even in tight knots, I find it important to work on when its dry only. This happens when I do something carelesss like ride in a convertible without a hat or going to the gym without braiding my hair first. I add some baby oil, oilve oil, or special detangling product to the mat. And contary to what every one advocates, I use a small tooth comb at this instance. But always work from the bottom up.
Hi,It really does seem to be easier to detangle in the shower under running water. I also use that method. Do you also comb from the end to the scalp? By doing this you will minimize breakage and will notice a difference in your comb-out process. I know it may be time consuming, but, take your time and try not to rush through the knots and tangles.Gently work them out with your fingers and wide tooth comb.A product I cannot live without is AUSSIE Slip Detangler. You can find it in most drug stores. I won't even wash my hair without it. It TOTALLY helps with the detangling and comb-out in my hair. It is very slippery and helps the comb glide through the hair. Also, try not to pull or tug while combing strands as this may cause breakage.Hope I've been of some help.Leilani
I am clueless about the detanlging process. I still get a comb full of breakage every time? Is it easier to do it in the shower under the running water. This seems to be the only time that it works for me - sometimes. Also, has anyone ever tried Parnevue hair conditioner (a leave in creme)?
