In my layman's description, I would say that regular hot rollers are more like a curling iron type action wherein the roller is heated with actual heat. The base where the rollers sit heats up much like an iron, which, in turn heats the roller. With steam, there is a container of water that produces steam into the roller and it's heated with steam instead of heat. If your hair is straight and hard to hold a curl, steam works very well. If it holds a curl pretty easily, heat rollers would probably work fine too. However, they have a tendency to create more damage to your hair because of the high heat it takes to make the curl versus making the curl with steam. Hope this helps! Kelly F. .
