In my practice a root perm by my definition usually means only reperming of the 'new growth', much as a color is retouched only at the root area, or it can be varied as to give support to the area closest to the scalp in certain styles, particularly shorter, shag type cuts. william

Sue, the perm isn't damaging as long as it is done properly (not overprocessed) and is healthy to begin with. I think any chemical service dries the hair out slightly but the use of a good conditioner should restore the hairs natural strenghth and shine.

My friend told me that she recently got a root perm (I haven't seen it yet) ... just wondering what it is and how it is done when it is done right? What's the end result look like? BTW - my friend has like ash blond hair that was in a spiral perm.
