If its more orangy, try using blue/green based color. Just apply to the root area. the reason your roots are 'hotter' is because your hair is healthier there, less porous, so its more difficult to get the red out.

I really don't have many solutions, just wanted to say I recently got my hair colored a dark blonde and had the same thing happen! I feel for ya! However, it seems that with each washing a little of the red comes out, so just give it time.
