Hi, Stylists on this board will probably lynch me for my advice, but I found it to work best when I dyed my hair unnatural colors. First of all, you want to get a kind of dye called Special FX. It's incredibly strong, and as long as you use a dark red, it should dye over the blue (may turn out purple, dont know). I used blue over dark green, and than purple over the blue, and it looked fine. To lighten up the blue, either try washing with a strong shampoo, or use some other method. Some which worked for me include mixing a paste of salt and water and leaving it on (I had this idea when I realized swimming in the ocean was pulling out my color) for a while. A more damaging method is to pour some kind of solvent through the highlights. As long as you can get them to a color that is lighter than the red you want to use, it should be ok.
I broke down and had my hair bleached and dyed blue in about 7 or 8 chunks in my hair. Happily, it didn't clash with my base color, but between washing, and everyday wear and tear, the color is fading (it used to be intense, now it's a lighter shade of royal blue), and I have tiny chunks of blond on some layers of my hair. I use deep conditioners 2-3 times a week, ad use conditioning sprays. I bought some semi-perm. dyes at Sally (purple, red, and blue) but the blue is a little dark. Can I use a strong shampoo, strip some of the color, apply the blue, and wash it with a gentle shampoo to lighten it a little? Also, if I have a little bit of blue, and I want to go red, how can I strip the color almost completely? Thanks!
