My hair is very dark red actually, it's the same darkness as fairly dark brown, it's naturally black. Since I've tried to dye my hair.... 3 times now i'm not very confident about wasting the condition of it a forth, I'll wait till after Christmas at least when it's a little longer and bleach it.
You basically have two choices. You can either go blonde right away and go bleach your hair to pale yellow and then use a toner to color over the bleach, so it isn't that ugly neon yellow color. You can find toner at Beauty Supply Shops.
The second choice is to go back brown. Since your hair is red right now, you can probably dye with a permenant dye or a toner to a level 3 medium brown (red is medium browns underlaying pigment), or if your hair is red-orange you can dye your hair to light brown. Make sure you do a strand test first.
I think the best bet is for you to bleach now. It will only take you 1 bleaching to get a pale yellow color if your hair is red, and you might have to do more bleachings when your hair is brown. So you will probably end up with more damage if you end up dying your hair brown and bleaching later.

I've dyed my hair three times in the last 4 months, is that too much? I dyed it about 4 months ago and twice in the last two weeks. I don't want to damage it as I'll be bleaching it early next yeat, although I would like to try and get lighter hair again. The colour never took to my hair except the roots the first 2 times, the second time it mainly just had a red shine, it lightened it a little and came out best the third time (Red all three times).
Any suggestions?
I'm thinking of dying it the lightest brown I can that way when it fades it will be light so It won't need to be bleached as much.
My hair doesn't feel damaged though, it's pretty thick and strong although quite dry at the bottomback of my head.
