Zigzagging works for me. Also, there are brush on mascara like cover ups as well as a crayon called "Tween Time". It's works very well as long as you don't let your roots go too far before coloring. It washes out but I've used it in a pinch and my hubby thought I had my hair re-done!
Both can be found at Sallys.

body and volume.... blow dry your hair upside down with lots of hair spray and volumizing products.....big hair hides roots.. also, you could try zig-zagging your part

This was suggested by another poster here, but instead of re-touching my roots every 3 weeks, I'm using Natural Instincts Color that lasts about 24 shampoos, and actually allows my roots to be much less noticeable, if at all.
I noticed when I just colored with the NA, that it left my hair incredibly shiny, healthy and full of body. No damage, and actually seemed to act as a deep conditioner to my hair. Also, you only have to leave the color on 10 minutes (20 minutes for resistant gray hair).
I'll re-touch my roots with my permanent color in another month (30 days after using Natural Instincts), and plan on only using permanent color every 2-3 months from now on.
(I use the color Sahara -- my color is a medium/light ash blonde).

I have to redo my roots every two to three weeks because my hair grows out enough by that time that I start getting the "skunk stripe" look.
Surely others don't get their hair colored so often--so what is the secret to hiding roots as they grow out?
I'd like to go to a salon and get professional coloring, but there is no way I can afford that every two to three weeks. So unless I can find a way to hide my roots, I'm stuck dyeing my hair at home.
