40 is the strongest. It processes faster, but it can also be more damaging. I think most OTC products use 20 vol.
I'm not a pro. Maybe someone else will have an opinion on whether you should use it.
P.S. If I'm not mistaken, 40 vol is usually used for lightening because it contains more peroxide. Is the dark ash brown darker or lighter than your natural colour? If you're going darker, I think you would probably be better off using 20 vol. if you can get some. I think 40 vol. would give you unpredicable results -- maybe too much warmth. If you use the 40 vol, make sure you do a strand test first.
My user name is WAY too long. Just call me Juliana. :-)
What is the difference between 20, 30 and 40 vol creme? I'm getting ready to dye my hair dark ash brown, but all I have is 40 vol oreor creme from loreal.. is that going to be OK?
