A toner applies a translucent tone to bleached hair. They are used to tweak or balance the various levels which appear through bleaching. Bleaching results in orange, gold, yellow or pale yellow hair -- not very natural looking. A toner can give the hair a more natural-looking blonde colour.
For example, I did bleach highlights over about 95% of my hair last week. I thought it was looking too gold, so today I applied some Born Blonde Winsome Wheat toner (an ash shade) to tone down the gold and give my hair more of a neutral blonde colour.

What is it that you don't like about your colour? Is it too light? Too yellow? Too orange? Too ashy? Specific toners can take care of these problems. Just make sure you know exactly what you want your colour to look like -- maybe take a magazine photo with you. Then discuss it with your colourist -- a good colourist will take the time to do a consultation with you -- he/she should discuss options with you and be willing to give you a price quote up-front.

hey everyone...i have a lil bit of a color porb. Last time i got my hair higlighted the lady practicly DYED it blonde...i hated it but everyone else loved it. I still hate it 3 months later. Im going in tom to get the roots touched up and i was wondering if i should ask her to put a lil toner in it just to get it to tone down a little. My mom AND my boyfriend doesnt want me to because they love it how it is....but i dont think im ever going to like it. I dont want a drastic change at all i just want a not so bright/fake looking color. But they think im going to hate it even more when afterwards. Whats your opinion? And about how much extra does toning cost?
