Hi akasara. Permanent colour won't LIGHTEN permanent colour, but you may be able to tone down the red in your hair by using a permanent ash colour that is the same level or DARKER than your current level. You can't get the dark golden blonde you want with a permanent colour at this point. You might be able to get a neutral brown. Then, you could highlight with the Creme Lights on top of that.

I forgot to ask one question. Was your hair dark brown before you dyed it? (For some reason I was thinking it was dark blonde before.) If your hair was dark brown, I have to subtly alter my advice --

ColorFix will only remove the dye. It probably won't lighten your hair enough for you to dye it dark blonde right away. You will probably end up with a shade of orange (this is normal). Then you'll have to bleach to gold or dark yellow and use a permanent dye to get to dark golden blonde. (A med. neutral or even ash blonde shade would probably give you a dark golden blonde. Don't put a golden shade on your hair, or you could end up with orange.)

ColorFix is quite gentle. It doesn't contain any bleach. Even if you have to use it twice to remove all the dye that's in your hair, it's not very damaging. Igora Modulat is gentle too. L'Oreal makes a colour remover but it tends to sort of fry people's hair -- really harsh.

I hope some of this is helpful. I'm afraid of confusing you or sending you in the wrong direction. A really good salon is always your safest option. Home hair colouring can be very successful, but you have to do your homework and do plenty of test strands.
My user name is WAY too long. Just call me Juliana. :-)

Hi THANKS for your advice! You are VERY helpful.

I just need a couple of things clarified if you don't mind....

You said an option I have if I don't want to use color remover is to " use a permanent ash brown shade on your current hair colour to tone down the red." But, can permanent color change the ugly red I have now? I thought permanent dyed hair won't be changed by adding more dye? I don't want to go any darker if possible... Do I have that right?

Also, does color remover damage the hair... My hair is fine and already a bit dry and slightly damaged. I want to change the color, but need to put the least "stress" on my hair... What would you suggest?

Since Creme Lights can be used on dyed hair, you don't HAVE to use ColorFix. It's up to you. If you hate the colour it is now, it will still be there as the base colour for your highlights. You could remove the dye with ColorFix and then use a permanent dye to get it to a base colour you like. Or, you could use a permanent ash brown shade on your current hair colour to tone down the red. It's up to you.

One more option is to heavily highlight your hair so that your base colour isn't really visible anymore (it'll be bleached away). Then tone the brassiness with a toner or a demi-permanent colour after you've highlighted . This is what I did to my hair; I started with medium ash brown dyed hair, then did a lot of highlights, then used Natural Instincts 06 Linen. I'll post a photo of my results at the bottom of this message.

Whatever you choose to do, make sure you do test strands first.
As for how to do this, you have two choices. I have really long, thick hair so I usually snip a 1/4" wide section of hair from a place where it won't be missed and test on that. You definitely need more than 1 hair to see what colour emerges.

If you don't want to snip off a piece of your hair, find a section of your hair that isn't very visible. Underneath your hair, about 1" behind your ear is a good spot. Choose a 1/4" wide section, put a piece of tinfoil underneath it (to keep the product from getting on the rest of your hair) and apply the bleach or colour. Let it process, rinse of the product, dry the test patch and look at your results.

Most products need to be used right away. Creme Lights can dry up in less than an hour. It's only active while it's wet. One option is to carefully measure out small amounts of the powder, developer and creme colour and mix them in the correct proportions. You'll have to do your math and be exact. This can be tricky, especially when dealing with those little pouches of powder and the creme in the tube. I recommend using a separate box. It'll cost you an extra $15 or so, but it's worth it.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

2 questions.

I want to try the creme highlights on my hair that ways dyed about 6 months ago. Do I need to do color remover first? My hair is naturally dark brown, it was dyed to an ugly red/brassy brown. I want a more golden/ ashy dark blonde with no red.

How do I do the strand test? Do I apply the highlights to a section of hair on my head or do I pull out a hair and test it that way?. Is one hair enough to really see the color, or how many hairs? Also, the stuff on the box says to use it right away, so If I take the time to do a strand test, do I really need to buy 2 boxes.. one just for the test?

THANKS!
