My mom had me in the curly perm thing too for several years when I was a kid and I hated it. I didn`t really start growing my hair until high school and then I enjoyed the long hair so much that I have been letting it grow just about ever since.

Hi,

Until I was about 7 years old my mom let me grow my hair long and I had a mid-length ponytail. Then my mom got a bug to get me perms. UGH. I looked like Shirley Temple and hated it. The perms ruined my hair so my aunt (who cut my hair in her basement) chopped it up into a weird bob thing. I hated that so I refused to let anyone touch my hair until 6th grade. Then I went with a pixie because it was the "hot" look at the time.

By Freshmen in HS I had a super short cut with long shaggy bangs and two "side burns". I had short hair all through HS and into college.

For my senior photo my best friend Linda Kacic teased my hair into a big hair look and I had one tiny "flip" on side that looked a little like a shark fin or a propeller. Unfortunately that horrible photo of me with the fin shows up at every HS reunion and it will probably show up somewhere that I don`t want it to. :-)

By my 2nd year in college I was growing my hair and had a I Dream Of Jeannie style. From that point on I flirted with longer locks including my own version of a long Farrah but never got my hair to my waist until I started growing it in the late 80s. Although it is still growing slowing it is really stuck about 5 inches below my waist. I just got 1 inch trimmed off because it was splitting from a variety of reasons including my lack of attention. :-(

Great topic. Thank you. I have loved all the hair stories.

Best wishes,
Karen

I`m like Sherry (above). My hair was waistlength until I was a junior in high school, when I had it cut it first to shoulder length and then to a short style. That was 25 years ago! Until then, my mom trimmed it. I remember some complaints about tangles but no real "family trauma" about my hair when I was young. Now it`s bra strap length and I`m hoping to get to waistlength again.

Mine was mid back until I was nine and since then its been going from shoulder length to bobs ever since. Its now three inches below my ears and I`m 16. I want it 5 inches below my shoulders. My dad wouldn`t let me get it cut when I was little, not sure why but I`m grateful for no pixie cuts at a young age.

well until I was about 8 it was mid back, then 9 cut to shoulders, then 10-13 it was ear length (I figured that if it was that short then it would be easy to look after) and now past shoulders but thinking of cutting !

My hair isn`t long right now but was when I was young. I didn`t cut it until 7th grade. (what a disaster!)

I went for a cut & perm. (I should`ve known better when the salon made you PAY FIRST!)

my back was to the mirror the whole time and when she was done I went from long semi-curly silky hair at waist level to cotton candy frizz above my shoulders! <<<< shudder>>>>>

when I got to be a teen, I asked mom that and she replied with a totally straight face, "Why, to embarass you, of course."

been there ... got the pixie cut

Actually I was a tomgirl and got too long hair tangled in everything at one point, As it ended up, it was usually about shoulder length or a tad longer. I remember I cried when I looked in the mirror and saw the pixie cut

I swear that nearly every woman that I "know" who had a pixiecut as a child hated it!

So why on earth did our moms do this to us?!

In all fairness, I do understand that long hair on some little girls just will not work. A friend of mine very much loves long hair, but her 3-year-old just threw a fit every time she tried to comb her hair. However, the little girl was spared a pixie! Her mom cut kept it to just below the shoulders. It was perfect -- short enough to be manageable with tangles, yet long enough for barrettes and little pigtails.

My hair has a child was cut in a short pixie and I hated it! People thought I was a little boy. It was easier for my Mom to take care of it when it was that short I guess. That is why my hair has been always long throughout my adult life.

My hair varied from shoulder length and longer with fringe as a kid. It got cut quite short through school and then I grew it really long, then came the dyes and my hair`s been short ever since!

My hair was long-- only trimmed here and there for neatness and control by my Mom-- until I was about twelve. (She kept it just past the middle of my back). At 12 I got it cut to shoulder length and let it grow for a couple years. It grows too fast and I`ve choped it above my shoulders, even above my chin, every two or three years since. (Every time I`ve done more than a trim it has been at or well past the middle of my back) It was never short as a kid `cause Mom thought it would never be long. No fear there-- I can do whatever with it and know if it turns disasterous I can chop it really short and have it annoyingly long in a matter of two years or so.

at first haircut at age 4 - waistish. cut six inches off at that age, grew till age six, waistish. cut short between 6-10. At age 10, after getting a 1"cut, decided to grow it to my waist. Cut "stylish layered bangs" in 7th grade, regretted it in 6 months. 8th grade, began growng bangs long. at 16 it was almost all one length, and to my waist again.

The only reason I got my hair cut off was because I hated it whem my mother yanked-I-mean brushed my hair and braided it. If it was possible to teach me to brush my own hair at that age, I would have never cut it off. I don`t think I wanted to learn, or they never asked me if I wanted to learn. Maybe I tried to brush it, but couldn`t. I don`t remember. But, cutting it short was my decision.

I wear my hair now about 3 inches past bra length. It`s funny bcz when I was a kid, my hair grew past my buttocks and it remained this way until I was about 10 or 11. After that I kept it very short since it was easier to care for.

In my 20`s, I decided to let it grow out again and I don`t think I will ever chop it off again!

When I was one year to four I blond hair, curly, and it was below my shoulder.
When I was six to ten my hair was light brown and cut short.
Ten and older my hair was above my shoulder and curly again.

Great thread!! I had really long hair, past my waist, until I was a Junior in high school. I`m trying to grow it out again, right now it`s about two inches above my waist.

Full length - somewhere around the waist until my aunt decided I wasn`t "stylish" enough. Then first came the inch long bangs (remember I`m OLDE) then shorter and shorter.

Never did like it short...gabi
