QuoteReplyTopic: Removing Shrinkies-Help Posted: February 19 2005 at 11:45am
Hi there when I first started doing shrinkies I used a mens hair straightener, when I applied them with that I heard the sizzle. When I finally got Dr Locks heat clamp, since I've been using that I've not heard a sizzle, I've had the heat clamp at the highest temperature and held the clamp on for about 15 second and then rolled it, when I've done a few I'll then feel the ones I've done before and they are rock hard. I did notice hair pulling out with the shrinkie removal at first before I got the knack to it, you have to heat and hold the clamp on the shrinkie and work it down the hair, never drag it, that's what I was doing at first and that's when the hair was coming out x

Yeah Im pretty excited about this one. Ive had similar wigs before but never one this long. Not a bad price either, $47.00. At least this will give my hair time to recover. When Im wearing a wig I dont use any product in my hair except shampoo and spray in conditioner so it springs back pretty quickly.

I put in the sides and my husband put in the back. We both rolled the shrinkie after it was heated. I heard a lite sizzling sound.
The curious thing was when I reheated them to remove them I heard the sizzling sound again. Makes me think they werent heated enough the first time. My flat iron has 25 heat settings and I had it on full blast and mine came no where near rolling up into a little ball. I also noticed when I reheated them they flattended out like a micro link. This was just a weird experience and one Im not willing to repeat.
I did try heating them and tugging on the extension and I got maybe a dozen to slid out with the shrinkie still attached. The rest were literally welded to my hair.

yes on some of my test strandsand only a few, during removal I turned my flat iron to the highest out of 25 settings and it has turbo, and that was on too. I clamped down for probably 15 seconds when I unclamped to look at the shrinkie to see what was happening as I opened the iron I could see the shrinkie snap and roll up. Now, I dont know if this is normal, I have a cheap 3/4 inch wide conair flat iron. So I am not sure how consistant this thing heats. I dont know if anyone else has had this happen or not? But I do believe that the results vary and are too inconsistant with a flat iron. But I also believe even with the correct tool, it takes some practice getting your heat right and time right, along with rolling correctly. I dont suggest anyone applying a full head of shrinkies until they have done enough practice to have that all down pat! I still havent put in a headful, because Ive come to the conclusion that I need to get the correct tool first, and get my technique tweaked.
Hmm...this is just a thought, but perhaps the problem is not so much in the heating than in the rolling technique. I'm still a little shaky on my shrinkie use too (my results have been a bit inconsistent).
Yes. Me too. Especially doing them myself. I don't know about Emma - did your hubby do them for you? Or someone?
but now (and from looking at Emma's pics), I am wondering if we're not taking enough time to roll them between the fingers after the heat is applied. Emma and Syren, how did you roll them into place? For me, some of them formed very, very well, and others not so well
Exactly. That's exactly right. Sometimes they're VERY hot, which can be good after waiting a few seconds, then molding the shrinkie around the tip, rolling it. But again - inconsistent. And taking them out?! I do both: either heat the shrinkie to hotter than hell and pull the strand (see Emma's pictures) or heat shrinkie and pull down with wand (see Emma's pictures). Hmmm. It's a process, and like Emma said, it may not be for me. I'm trying other things too. Like....I just got a glue gun today from Doc's a some keratin stix. But right now, I can't even go there. Will report more later.
They snap and roll up into a ball? OK...the plot thickens. I also never had the sizzling, although some of them looked perfectly fine. I was finger-rolling them into place, but you don't do that? Hmmm.... :)
Jenny what Ive found is when they get so hot they snap and roll up into a little ball. I havent seen one actually 'melt'. This happened to me with a few of them when I turned my flatiron to the highest setting and had the turbo on.
Melted plastic? Hmmm...that makes me think they got too hot.
I'm at a loss now.
This may sound like an odd question, but what's a shrinkie anyway? I mean, what's it made of? Is it flexible plastic? If so, does anyone know the melting, as opposed to shrinking, point? :)
Emma...am I understanding your post on your shrinkie removal?
reheat the shrinkie with my flat iron, the extension slides right out like melted butter but the shrinkie is being stubborn. Its like welded to my hair. I have to leave the flat iron on the shrinkie for about 30 seconds then try to pull it out of my hair and Im burning my fingers in the process
It sounds like you are heating the shrinkie then unclamping, and then trying to pull it out with your fingers? You should be holding the iron on there clamped snuggly and then gently pull down (still clamped) sliding the shrinkie and hair strand off all at once. Heck with my flatiron on high with turbo on, the shrinkie sometimes rolls up all falls right off the hair.
Hmm...this is just a thought, but perhaps the problem is not so much in the heating than in the rolling technique. I'm still a little shaky on my shrinkie use too (my results have been a bit inconsistent). I initally thought it was because I didn't heat some of them enough, which may still be the case, but now (and from looking at Emma's pics), I am wondering if we're not taking enough time to roll them between the fingers after the heat is applied.
Emma and Syren, how did you roll them into place? For me, some of them formed very, very well, and others not so well, and I think it may have something to do with the fact that I didn't really roll them down enough (because the shrinks are quite hot, of course).
I third that, ONLY USE A DOUBLE SIDED SHRINKIE TOOL...lol
Im in no way poo-pooing shrinkies, I still think their great and have awesome potential, theyre just not for me.
It continued to hurt and pull out my hair. When the last shrinkie was finally removed I thought YAH but then I couldnt get the residue out. Took me another 2 hours and much more hair loss to finally get it all out. I dont think the residue was glue. I think it was melted plastic. I tried everything I had on hand, conditioner, latex oil remover, shine spray, even veggie oil and the stuff would not budge.
I just went to ebay and ordered a new wig so all is not a total loss. Im going to give my poor head a looooooooong break.
Oh and Ive already made contact with someone that wants my shrinkies.

If it's any consolation, Emma, which I know it's not, that's EXACTLY EXACTLY what happens to me. Takes out hair every time and everything else you described. Which I know is no consolation. But....we must be doing something not right if other people don't have this same trouble. AMM- do you lose any hair when you take your shrinkies out? Kalika? Sherrie? Other hardcore shrinkie users? Or is this just the way it is with shrinkie removal?
Yikes, Emma...I'm sorry to hear about this. Did they continue to pull out your own hair when your friend heated them, or were you still having problems getting them out? :)
