hey all - i just had some pics emailed to me by a stylist i'm likely gonna have do my pinchbraids...
she included a bunch of pics, one of which is a girl with beautiful blonde stick straight (this stylist uses mainly trimco - only straight, some prostyles). anyway, one of the pics is of the girl after she braided and then steamed the hair. it's a beautiful wave...kinda messy, not really nice and more tidy "hot roller" curls...but more wavy than sleeping with the 50 mm PH only in braids, imo...

so i think jenny, your proposal of steaming with rollers in may be exactly right for recreating the wave.

i would post the pic, but it's her work...i'll ask her first and give her credit if okay.

Jenny, the one I posted is ceramic, but mine is metal. I've heard Rae say before that metal heat tools don't tend to get quite as hot as ceramic. I think you'll be able to find either metal or ceramic fairly easy. Mine has a metal rod with widely spaced plastic teeth, a skinnier plastic rod with boar bristles, and a concentrator attachment (or you can use it with no attachment). Basically, I have the same attachments shown in the picture, but the one that's actually shown on the dryer is a little different than mine. I only use the metal attachment myself because the metal helps curl my real hair, but the plastic with boar bristles might be even better for synth.

Oh, and mine was like $20 at Target a few years ago.

Great idea, Leia--I'll give it a try! (Hell, I'll try anything with synth....)

Generally, I'm not all that crazy about the wave I get from braiding--never have been, even with human. I also find that it doesn't really address the ends, which is what I'm most concerned with anyway.

That said, I do think the braid works better than the bun, which (at least for me) tends to create creases and kinks in the hair, rather than loose waves or body.

Last night, after I got steamed super-smooth, I slept with it in a bun, and the hair was bending every which way in the morning. So I blow-dried it straight a bit, then set it in the Carusos. I don't mind straight hair really, but I just don't like pin-straight hair on the ends.

I had a little luck with the round brush, but I think this hot-air brush would work much better. I'd be a little concerned if it's a metal barrel, though. Do you know if that Conair is metal or not? Should you get a size smaller than the curl you want, or doesn't it matter?

:)

Yesterday I was flat-ironing my hair, and I accidently got my PH strand with the iron. It didn't hurt it (since it was sandwiched in with real hair), and it gave it the same bend at the end that I give all of my hair with the flatiron. Today, my hair was pretty straight, but the PH strand still had the bend. Well, I was using a hot-air brush to dry my roots after a scalp wash, and I had the idea to use the same thing to fix the bottom of the PH strand. I used something similar to this (man, I should buy stock in Conair):

I fixed the ends of the PH and restored the smooth 50mm wave on the bottom. The hot-air brush on low isn't as hot as your standard curling iron and, it's easier to use than a blowdryer and a round brush. It's worth a try!
