I think and hope it's that way just because it is long enough to do so. But could be getting us ready for s shorter look or make it look that way. The day she does cut I'll be sad for she looks fantastic with it so long.
Has anybody else noticed that Ann Curry has been hiding her long hair behind her back much more than before? I wonder if it's starting to annoy her or if she's preparing viewers for the big cut.
Without checks and balances on places like Locks of Love, we would only be able to hear stories about Ann Curry and others thinking that LOL is a great place that uses all the hair it receives, while Doubting Thomases like myself would be forced to remain silent, unable to point out potential kinks in the armor or even complaints from the Better Business Bureau. Some how that seems unfair or, atleast, unbalanced.
Yes, I know full well that your response (22-Jan-2005 9:48:33 AM) was not directed at me. Just like you don't want to hear my "lecture," neither does Kramer need to hear yours.
To me, the conditions under which people choose to donate a charity which is shown in only in spectaculary flattering puff pieces does matter. Their ends do not justify their means, no matter how worthy their ends may or may not be.
Your post did not hurt my feelings, nor was I offended personally. But understand that my reaction was similarly "edgy" to yours to Kramer.
If nothing else, perhaps I am coming to the realization that any discussion of a (hair) political nature (such as this one) need either to be deleted or moved to the Hair Politics board. There are some here (perhaps many) who don't want to read about hair charities. They merely want to comment on how they love or hate some celeb's long or short hair or hair change. This board is about the celebs, not about charities involved with hair.
Today I ran across the people magazine with the article about donating her hair. All it says in the article is she is planning on donating her hair, it doesn't give any date (not January as mentioned in the other post) for when she plans to make the donation. So she could still let her hair grow for quite awhile before cutting it.
It was all about the hair and makeup this morning on the Today Show on NBC.
Katie, whose hair was cut shorter last week, switched the part to the other side today and looked like crap, although I'm sure some of you will think she looked sporty or perky.
Ann toned down the red lipstick and looked amazing with her long, gorgeous hair. I'm going to dread the day she cuts it.
Re-read my post, who said anything about being selfish and uncompassionate if men or women do or don't donate their hair and who else felt that I'm trying to "win" any arguments here?
My point was simply that, even if you feel that Locks of Love is the biggest scam in America please don't tell the 13 women who donated to the pitiful young girl in my link that people can't possibly make a difference by donating their hair.
By the way Dave this post wasn't about you, really. We all know how you feel about your hair, you've made that eminently clear. I'm happy to hear that you donate money to charities, but I frankly didn't need to know that about you either. Sorry if my post hurt your feelings, I surely didn't mean to offend.
Say what you will about Locks of Love, but Ann Curry looked spectacular on the NBC tribute to Johnny Carson tonight. Ann, let it grow, let it grow, let it grow!

Will you please stop it with the disparaging and speculative slander aboput hair donations? SHeesh, it's obvious to everyone here but you that you feel that long hair on a woman is something to be kept sacred from cradle to grave. Please take your eyes off of yourself and your own feelings and understand that some people are driven to the noble act of sacrafice by something more precisous to them than their own vanity. It's called compassion.
Kramer's presentation of legitimate questions is valid. Just because a certain POV has been presented in a media feature does not mean that it is legitimate, or that it is the only perspective on the issue.
If you think that people who don't donate their own long hair are merely being selfish and uncompassionate, that's your problem. If donating hair is important to you, then do your own part and grow you own 12" donation -- don't be selfish and go to the barber/salon every 6 weeks and thoughtlessly discard that precious 3/4" growth to selfishly maintain your preferred hairstyle.
Plenty of people donate to a variety of charitable organizations. Myself included. Just because I don't donate my own hair does not make me uncompassionate. Get over yourself Carmichael. Let people keep their long hair if they want, free of duress. And don't champion those who distort (or fail to present) any of the facts surrounding the amount of hair donated compared to the amount used in hairpieces made for these charities. I am in favor of people making informed decisions -- not keeping them in the dark while tugging on their heartstrings.

Does it really matter whether one donates money or hair? If money were donated, it would go towards operating expenses for the charity. If hair is donated, it'll either be used to make wigs, or sold to help cover operating expenses for the charity. So it's pretty much the same thing. It's just that if hair is the donation, there's at least a chance it'll actually end up on the head of a child. Maybe people just like feeling it could. Anyway, I liked Ann so much more in shorter hair, so I don't think she should need any excuse or explanation to cut it, so long as she does :-) .
It appears the answer is around 10 - 12. That is ALOT of hair for one wig.
You've got your sources. I've got mine. The following information is from tlhs.com's FAQ:
Shall I donate my hair to Locks of Love? Locks of Love is a charity organization, which collects human hair to create wigs for cancer patients. So far a noble idea. However during long lasting discussions and research activities of our members, LoL did not get out of the game in such noble fashion. It is said that the performance of the organization is not as good as one would like to, in fact it is said that they gathered much more pony tails than wigs manufactured. I would highly recommend to give a donation a second thought, to keep the hair and better donate money to a charity you know well enough.
Please follow as well this link, a report from the Better Business Bureau. Read as well this text coming from a member of ETLHS, nicely written together:
We disapprove of Locks of Love because:
- Their stated purpose is to make wigs for alopecia sufferers, but news stories and talk shows say the wigs are for children with cancer who lose their hair to chemo. This gets more human interest from their audiences. But chemo patients are generally better served medically and functionally with synthetic wigs, and many are more comfortable with turbans or caps. Most children with cancer prefer not to wear wigs. The organization seems to make no effort to correct the misconception about who gets the wigs.
- They make far fewer wigs than the number of ponytails they collect would supply, and seem to have no valid explanation for this disparity.
- The Better Business Bureau has found them not to be totally compliant in following proper procedures for administering a charity.
- Locks of Love has publicly acknowledged that they have ample supplies of hair, but they make no effort to switch their solicitations to cash rather than more hair. All they seem to want is for more and more people to cut off their hair. This seems to be much more important to the press, the organization, and its proponents than the wig making.
- Television and print media is constantly showing long haired women being shorn. They show all this cutting, and only rarely anything about the wig recipients. It suggests that long hair has no value to its wearer except as something to be chopped off. Although there are obviously many people who adore seeing hair chop events, many other people LOVE seeing long hair like mine. My hair gives pleasure to me and to others who see it and DOES serve a worthy purpose being on my head. You should hear the women in my aunt's nursing home admiring my hair. It gives them a lot of happiness to see it.
- Most of the donated hair does NOT wind up on a child's head. It is sold to commercial wigmakers who are selling their wigs to models, celebrities, etc., or sits in a warehouse.
- Thousands of long haired women are nagged by both well-meaning and mean-spirited people that they should give up hair they love in the name of this charity. This is just plain rude. Why aren't they giving their car away to a poor person, giving their home away to a homeless person, or selling their jewelry and other possessions to donate the cash to the less fortunate? To women on this site, it is NOT just hair, just as a to a car aficionado their automobile is not just a car that is disposable. Generally, our hair means more to us than it would mean to Locks of Love's intended recipients.
Other regulars on this site will be able to post with more specific details on these reasons. I hope you understand our positions and will not hold them against us.
