I stopped biting when I made a conscious decision to grow my nails long. then I'd feel guilty for biting off my progress. Likewise, I stopped hair pulling (trichotillomania) after making a conscious decision to grow out my hair. (don't know about the rest of you, but in my family even quitting cigarettes is that easy)
Paint your nails. You'll either guilt trip yourself about not wanting to ruin the polish or just not like the taste.
They also make an awful tasting clear coat to keep you from biting your nails (or just use the anti-thumb sucking stuff). However, it tends to transfer itself to anything you eat with your fingers too (chips, pretzels, that sort of thing).
