I feel ya girl. Same thing happened to me, although my hair wasn't quite as long to begin with and my natural color is lighter. I had been coloring my hair with high-lift color, decided to go dark brown and 6 months later wanted to be blonde again. After getting the color stripped, a horrible hilight from a horribly inexperienced stylist (who stuck me under a dryer with bleach on my stripped hair) left me with broken pieces that sound like your situation. I literally had sections that were only a few inches long throughout the entire top of my hair. I had to cut probably 4 inches off the length (which put my hair slightly above my shoulder) since I was unwilling to cut my entire head to the length of the breakage and I wore my hair up or pulled back for practically a year while it grew out. I do not recommend you cut your hair completely off, it is easier to wear it back while the breakage sections grows out then it is to grow your full head of hair out. Try braiding it, pony tails, buns, etc. Once the breakage is around six inches you can get long layers cut in to blend it. Get a good trim, deep condition with protein-rich conditioners, lay-off heat styling and for the love of god, do not bleach your hair again! Stick with highlift color and go to a professional for this (I do, despite my horrible experience although it is a different salon, different city). Coloring at home is okay if you are not changing your color more than 2 levels lighter or darker, but when you are that dark to begin with, going blonde is best left to professional stylists who have experience with blonde-ing.

Hi, I found myself in a similar position a few months ago, and I vowed to give my hair a rest for a good year and to learn new habits for good.

No blow dryers, in frequent washings with gentle shampoo, tons of conditioning and protein hair treatments. I have been using Redken's Extreme line of products, including their protein treatments.

In the meantime, I pull my hair back everyday, and attach either a scrunchee hair piece or a pony tail clip wig. I was able to find colors that match my hair well .

Unfortunately, being patient and learning from our mistakes is the only thing we can do.

Hang in there - its been several months for me and my hair looks 100% better and yours will too!

Yikes Beachbum! Don't feel bad...when I was in beauty school the same thing happened to me. I was trying to grow my hair out but it had to be cut off....There's not much else you can do. Your hair is probably extremely damaged if it's coming out. Does it feel kind of mushy? If so then your hair is fried. My best suggestion would be to cut it to the length it is damaged (if you can handle it shorter) and do a deep conditioning treatment a couple of times a week. STAY AWAY FROM CHEMICALS-EVEN AT HOME KITS! You won't go bald, you just have to let your new healthy hair grow back in. Trust me...my hair is just now growing back. It was very traumatic for me so I can relate! (I cried for about a week i think :) ) Also stay away from any kind of heat from a blow dryer or flat iron or curling iron. this will just further damage your hair. But damaged ends even half way down are bad if you don't cut them. It's like a run in pantyhose, it will just keep going up your hair shaft. Also stay away from grocery store brand conditioners like pantene. go invest in some good stuff your stylist can recommend. I hope this helps and my heart goes out to you...i know what you are going through!!!! I hope everything works out for you and I hope this helped a little :)

First of all, what product did you use exactly? Did you use bleach...like bleach? Clorox? Or was it something from the beauty supply?

If you're getting dark roots already, it must have been at least a week or more since you did this, right? You won't go bald then, even if your hair breaks off to the dark root, you'll still have the dark hair there.

I wouldn't put anything else in your hair if its this bad. Wait until it grows out more before doing anything else so if it breaks off at the healthy hair, you'll still have some hair left on your head. If you get to where you can't stand the way it looks, go to a salon, but remember that even at the salon, your hair can still break off if its that badly damaged.

If you ever want to go blonde again, go to the beauty supply and buy a 40 volume developer and a high lift color (like level 10) with a green base. You'll have to dye your hair repeatedly with that, your hair will go through an orangey stage before it gets to blonde. Once there's no orange left in it, and you can call it all officially yellow, stop using the green base dye. If you want it less yellow, or to go to platinum white blonde, you can then dye it again with the 40 volume developer and a dye with a violet base (violet counters yellow).

I repeat though, don't do any of that now, your hair is too damaged if its breaking off. That was just so you know what to do next time you want to go blonde from your natural color, if you're going to avoid a salon like this time. Salons are always the better choice.

First, the bad news is you've ruined your hair. But you knew that. Bleach is really bad for the hair, and hair that's bleached repeatedly is going to be destroyed sooner or later. Hair should never be lightened more than once.

So the other bad news is you're going to have to clean up your hair routine and start doing something sustainable if you want to have hair on a regular basis.

Of course the good news is that your hair will grow back. But you knew that too.

You've got plenty of time to think about these things while you wait for your hair to come back. Why don't you talk to a stylist about proper hair care?

Just looking for a few good hair slaves - is that too much to ask?

Hi! i started bleaching my hair a few months ago . well it was not turning the right color, so i usually do it 3 times within 2 days. (bleach). I am noticing now that my hair is just falling out in clumps. if i put my hand through my hair and pull lightly, a clump will come out no matter what. Is this from the bleaching? im going to cry, my hair was so long and curly and i didint realize this would do this to my hair, is this the problem though? i mean, is it most likely that this is the problem? and is there ANYTHING i can do to stop it from falling out? or is it just going to make me bald? im going to cry!

can someone tell me what breakage actually is? i dont think its from roots. like, when i get in the shower, I will shampoo and then if i put my hand on my back, i have hair all down my back. my roots are not bald, but i am now feeling that my hair feels like it was cut off at the roots in some parts, so is this the breakage u mean? i guess waht i want to know is, what is the definition of breakage, what is breakage? and now my roots are so dark, is there a way for me to color my hair and get these roots the light golden blond w/ out bleaching again. my roots are dark brown; what cani do?
