It is actually common for people to experience hair texture changes as they get older.
As far as your questions....curls are still in fashion. However waves are even more in demand thanks to Giselle, the super model that is rumored to hang out with Leo DeCaprio. She has natural waves and it is all the rage now to have soft waves.
I have naturally wavy hair that tends to have some curl to it when it is shorter. I have learned some tricks to help give my naturally dry hair a rest from the ravages of blow drying...yet avoid frizz. Dallas is not exactly humid but we do have some hair challenging weather patterns.
I "use" my waves and incorporate them into my style when I wear my hair down. I use a really good moisture enhancing shampoo followed by a good rinse-out conditioner. Then I use a rich detangler and then leave-in conditioner and a diffuser with the fingers. I towel blot my hair and then pick it out. I blow dry my bangs straight and then I use a warm to cool, slow setting on the blowdryer with the diffuser and I scrunch my hair and use the diffuser to get soft waves all over my head.
I finish with just a dab of a silicone based sealer which keeps my hair frizz free and full of waves. I have people ask me if I have a perm.
You are wise to be questioning how a perm would impact your hair. Perms involve the application of chemicals to your hair. So if your hair is already dry you do risk some damage to your cuticle. The good news is that you have 6 months to your wedding. So if your hair is damaged from a perm you can cut if off and start over and still have 6 months to grow back 2-4 inches of hair.
The bad news is that there is no guarantee that a perm will NOT dry out your hair. So yes, there is definitely a risk. It is very important to discuss all of this with your stylist and weight the pros and cons especially since you have a major hair event...your wedding..on the horizon.
I understand that when you have to blow dry your hair every day that it can be time consuming. Have you thought about drying your hair just enough to remove the moisture, wrapping it into a cut knot or bun and attaching a claw clip and letting it air dry?
Maybe a safe plan would be to let your hair alone until your wedding and then consider more efficient hair care solutions after the wedding. Then you don`t have to worry about having a hairstyle that you might regret later for your big day.
I also use a variety of great straightening balms when I blow dry my hair straight. I can`t say enough about Edwin Paul`s Smoothing Lotion. I can`t do it every day because I don`t have time and I don`t like to abuse my hair with the heat. However, for special events and about once a week that stuff works really great for me and my wavy hair.
Lots of times when I wear a business suit I will wrap my hair while it is damp in a fat bun, pop in a hair stick or claw clip and go. Later in the day when it is dry I will undo it and viola...soft waves.
I think you might want to experiment with frizz fighting gels and leave in conditioners and see if you can maintain your current hair status quo until after your wedding.
Best wishes, Karen

My hair is just at my mid back, and it has been highlighted several times. It is semi dry, but no split ends. As I get older it gets more & more wavy. I live in very humid weather, so I have to blow dry my hair until all the frizz is out in order to make it straight. I`m thinking with a perm I won`t have to blow dry my hair all the time. On the other hand is curly hair out or is it in? And...I`m getting married in June what if the perm totally fries my hair? My appointment is in 5 days.
